H House is an exercise in responding to the qualities of the existing house and spirit of the original heritage listed 'Garden Suburb' subdivision. The rhythm of the surrounding context is continued and the single-storey character maintained, concealing a second storey within the shadowy gable form. The pure silhouette recesses modestly behind the original north-east-facing street frontage. To enable direct sunlight into the living spaces, the addition is separated from the existing building by a roof garden that defines a new entry and creates a threshold between old and new. Landscaping introduces splashes of colour and dappled light through the gable windows, changing with seasons.
The longer we spend in our home, the more we love it. The way the sun catches the windows, the wedges of light in dark corners, the angles of brick and concrete that align with the softness of the marble, the seamless transition from inside to out, day to night, cold to warm. Whilst I can honestly say it was at times one of the more stressful things I have endured, it is also one of the more wholesome, creative and inspiring projects we have been through. Thank you.
