Media summary

Government House Adelaide is significant as the oldest public building in South Australia and the oldest Government House in the country.

The main entrance is significant as it has seen Queen Elizabeth II and members of the Royal Family, along with State premiers, overseas politicians, diplomats and others walk through it in its over 150-year history.

The upgraded Government House State Entrance replaces the original steps and gravel paths leading to the front door, Ballroom and Offices with an elevated paved forecourt connecting the House, port cochere, driveway and garden using a gently graded walkway bordering the lawn and new steps.

The project was driven by the fundamental principle that everyone, whether a dignitary, award recipient, community member, or student, deserves the opportunity to enter through the same door.

The outcome was guided by the Burra Charter, ensuring that the original fabric of Government House was retained and conserved.
