Victoria
Galkangu, Bendigo’s GovHub contributes to the continual growth of Bendigo by establishing a stronger, more efficient public sector that delivers government services to the community. The new building is a state-of-the-art community asset and workplace that consolidates previously separate government agencies into a centralised location that represents and reflects the culture of the surrounding area.
Galkangu has an identity unique to Bendigo, one that draws upon its rich heritage and builds upon its plans for a thriving future. The design transforms operations for both customers and employees, breaking down silos and creating a one-stop-shop for community services and a hub for the local community.
Underpinned by sustainable solutions that will not only decrease running costs and the environmental footprint, the design enhances the wellbeing of staff and strengthens connections with the community
Commendation for Commercial Architecture
Located in the civic centre of Bendigo, Galkangu by Lyons establishes a strong urban presence through its perimeter block typology, and tuned, rhythmic articulation. Clever and nuanced, the form defers at moments, responding to city axis, approaches, and significant established gum trees.
Including extensive engagement with Dja Dja Wurrung community representatives, the serene central landscaped courtyard, omnipresent mass-timber structure, and vibrant staff hub interiors which reference local wildflowers, create a well-considered commercial workplace filled with natural light and joy.
The new Galkangu building in central Bendigo creates economic and career opportunities for our community, whilst providing key facilities to live and thrive. Government agency teams and departments that were formerly located in separate locations have been centralised, enabling collaboration in ways that were not previously possible.
This landmark building represents and respects the values of Bendigo’s traditional owners, the Dja Dja Wurrung people, and creates a space for reflection and reconciliation. The foyer and customer service centre enable us to provide a wider range of more accessible services, engaging us with our local community in an enriching way.
