Kew Golf Club commissioned Inarc Architects to design a new aluminium footbridge at the fourth green billabong, replacing an unsafe timber structure. The design seamlessly integrates with the riverine landscape while maintaining a distinct presence. The balustrade shape echo the arcs of surrounding tree branches, and the bridge’s colour complements native tree trunks and ducks.
Collaborating with contractor, Cope AG, client and consultants, Inarc ensured economic feasibility, using 3D visualisations and virtual walkthroughs to refine the design within budget. Engineered to withstand floods and waterborne debris, the bridge was prefabricated off-site for efficient installation.
The final result was an economically efficient bridge with an aesthetic appeal that blends with the riverine landscape, enhances the crossing experience, and improves safety. More than a crossing, it offers a moment of appreciation for the golf course, facilitating connection between nature, play and building as craft.
The new footbridge by Inarc enhances the Club’s ongoing golf course enhancements while significantly improving safety for members and guests. Designed to blend seamlessly with the billabong and native trees, it serves as both a functional structure and a visual landmark. The bridge also addresses seasonal flooding through carefully chosen materials and design elements, allowing it to withstand submersion. Inarc, Cope AG, and the consultant team collaborated to deliver a high-quality build within budget constraints. The result has been widely praised by members, adding both practicality and aesthetic value to our Club and our golf course
