Western Australia
Set on a sloping Bayswater site, this family home responds thoughtfully to its landscape and community. Two mature eucalyptus trees guided the layout, while stepped floor plates follow the slope to minimise disruption to the site. Drawing on the area’s modest, Australian vernacular, the house features lightweight upper forms and an earthy palette of tumbled brick, timber, and black-stained plywood, creating a contemporary yet harmonious presence alongside neighbouring weatherboard homes.
Designed around family living, the six-bedroom home includes a flexible office/guest room, compact yet functional children’s bedrooms, and generous living spaces oriented to southern park views and northern light. Sustainability is integrated throughout, with passive ventilation, solar shading, energy-efficient glazing, and rooftop solar. Collaboration with both an arborist and landscape architect preserved trees and revitalised the verge with native plantings, while careful detailing and durable materials ensure long-term comfort, functionality, and a cohesive architectural character that grows with the family.
Robeson Architects have designed us a beautiful home which perfectly suits the reality of everyday living for our family of six. It’s easygoing, open and full of light, and it handles the noise, mess and movement of a busy household. There’s space to hang out together, have friends over and let the teenagers spread out without feeling on top of each other. Plenty of well-planned storage helps keep everything organised, creating more calm and less chaos. The living areas flow straight outside, making entertaining relaxed and effortless. It’s a comfortable, flexible home that really works for how we live.
