Deepa and Paul’s house, born and realised during Covid. DP house was conceived digitally, an new experience for all.
The original gate keepers cottage of the original estate has since been victim to neglect and a series of questionable improvements. The intervention undoes the questionable recent history while giving the home a new life that respects its original heritage fabric to extend its life into the future. Resisting the typical ‘knock down, rebuild’ culture of the area was important for such a highly trafficked corner site.
The relationship between old and new is acknowledged through both the formal composition of the home and the detailing. Formally the new addition mimics the gable pattern of the cottage and seamlessly integrates. Its expression is purposefully contemporary but not contrasting. Materiality is purposefully restrained for budget reasons and relies on form, play on light and spatial experience to elevate it beyond its parts.
