The design for Deer Park Station celebrates First Nations legacy, preserves the environment, and promotes a sustainable future.
Part of the Mount Derrimut Road Level Crossing Removal project delivered by the Western Program Alliance (WPA), Deer Park Station was co-designed with First Nations consultants, Balert Mura, Hassell (landscape), and Traditional Owners.
The design incorporates three key First Nations themes: Culture, Environment, and Geology, embodied in the concept ‘Layers of Country’.
Below Country, On Country, Wind County, Sky Country, and Star Country are incorporated through materiality, accessibility, visibility and connection.
The station canopy, inspired by Bunjil’s wings, symbolises protection and welcome. A green roof, a first for Victorian rail architecture, is planted with endemic grasses for birds and insects, particularly the endangered Golden Sun Moth whose protected grasslands border the precinct.
The public architecture at Deer Park enhances community liveability and integrates the neighbouring residential areas into a cohesive public realm.
