Media summary

Designed by Woods Bagot, Crows Nest Metro Station demonstrates how a confident civic intervention can be carefully balanced with a finely modulated architectural language. While the station presents a clear and cohesive overall expression, its form is deliberately broken down into smaller components that respond to the surrounding village character and pedestrian scale. Brick is employed as both structure and surface, operating simultaneously at the scale of the unit, the module, and the building as a whole. This material strategy grounds the station in its local context while referencing the area’s established masonry fabric.

Through calibrated textures, coursing, and articulation, the brickwork humanises the infrastructure, mediating between metropolitan ambition and domestic streetscapes. Generous thresholds and integrated public spaces foster moments of pause and connection, embedding the station within daily community life.

The project offers a refined model for integrating large‑scale infrastructure into established neighbourhoods while reinforcing identity, continuity, and place.

Crows Nest Metro Station establishes a refined new civic landmark that embodies design excellence while balancing major transport ambition with the intimate character of its village setting. Its crafted, modulated, brick expression grounds the station in the local streetscape, offering a contemporary interpretation of Crows Nest’s identity. The design strengthens pedestrian links along Hume Street, connecting to Willoughby Road, and delivers welcoming public spaces that enrich community life. Through close collaboration between Sydney Metro and the design team, the project achieves clarity, durability, and environmental performance. The result is a station that is intuitive, sustainable, and deeply connected to place.
