The Canberra Netball Centre is a refined yet robust architectural response to a vital community sporting facility. Designed to elevate the experience for players, officials, and spectators, the project transforms an ageing structure into a contemporary pavilion that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings along Northbourne Avenue.
The design prioritises connectivity, transparency, and durability. A lightweight cantilevered roof and expansive glazing establish a strong visual and physical connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing functionality while maintaining an elegant, floating aesthetic. The building’s material palette ensures longevity while reinforcing a bold and sophisticated identity.
More than a sports facility, the Centre strengthens its role as a community hub with multipurpose spaces and social areas. Thoughtful architectural gestures, including integrated artwork by Kalara Gilbert, celebrate cultural connections. Through a strong collaboration between architects, engineers, and stakeholders, the project delivers a striking yet highly functional asset to Canberra’s sporting landscape.
‘The Canberra Netball Association (CNA) original building was constructed in the 1970s and was in desperate need of redevelopment. The existing building did not cater for the 5,000 players, spectators, umpires and officials that walk through our gates each week. The new Clubhouse, even though on the same footprint, has been designed to provide more space, safer facilities, better amenities, along with dedicated meeting rooms and a ‘community hub’ space it is now a place we can call home and share with our netball community.’
