As a refined inner-urban home, City Cottage celebrates compact, connected community living. Designed for long-term city residents deeply embedded within Adelaide’s cultural and hospitality scene, the home acts as its own retreat, woven amongst the historic built fabric they have actively contributed to shaping. Rejecting scale and separation, the proposal instead embraces deliberately living small and living well – where density and heritage uncompromisingly coexist.
The home challenges the suburban ideal of excess and separation, and instead prioritises spatial openness, internal privacy, and a connection to the surrounding parklands as an extension of daily life. Internally, zoned spaces replace enclosed rooms, with custom joinery, integrated furniture and an oversized kitchen island supporting uninterrupted everyday flow. Light, restrained and deliberately edited, City Cottage is a counterpoint to the owners’ fast-paced hospitality and creative ventures – a place of calm, order and pause within the hum of the city they love.
The brief to Sans Arc was to turn our property into a city oasis using the existing, tight footprint to create more liveable space. We wanted a seamless indoor/outdoor look, feel, and function that is low-maintenance, streamlined, light and bright, with no clutter, to come home to at the end of our day and escape the chaos of our work life.Â
What Matiya has created is beyond our expectations, and he delivered our brief and vision in every aspect. We are thrilled with our new home, love living in the space and are proud to show it off.
