Located on the oceanfront in Bargara, the Campbell House is designed to be a comfortable home that reflects the relaxed lifestyle of the area, with nods to the beach shack architecture of earlier times. The clients sought a design that made the most of the outlook and orientation, while still being practical and easily maintained despite the exposed location.
Raised slightly above the gently sloping block, the house acts as both a lookout to the ocean and coastline, and as sanctuary from the winds and spray that can make living in a location like this challenging. Rooms are arranged along either side of a circulation spine, dividing the house into public and private zones.
Simple, honest materials, and efficient use of space on the long, wedge-shaped block have resulted in a home that respects its context, but provides the residents with a high level of amenity in a spectacular setting.
In my working role as a development consultant, I had enjoyed working with Tomas on several projects. As we had a great rapport, he was the natural choice to design our “forever home” on a very special site.
Initial sketches were produced in a collaborative process and reviewed leading to an agreed design path. The resultant design in our view was the perfect solution for both ours and the site’s requirements.
We are extremely thankful to Tomas and his staff for their contribution to creating house that is perfect for us and its setting.
