The Bank Street House in South Melbourne is a distinctive residential project that harmoniously blends Victorian heritage with modern brutalist design. Completed in 2024 by Technē Architecture & Interior Design, the home exemplifies duality by balancing historical elegance with contemporary rawness. Layered terraces adorned with greenery and steel-framed glass facades rise above the historical streetscape, integrating seamlessly into the urban fabric. The design juxtaposes the original structure’s raw, monolithic form with refined, human-scaled additions, creating spaces that are both grounded and expansive. Strategic use of light and shadow highlights textured materials, while large windows frame city views, connecting the interior to its metropolitan surroundings. Features like a rooftop garden and a basement recording space offer residents spaces for both social engagement and personal serenity. Bank Street House stands as a testament to the coexistence of industrial permanence and organic evolution in residential architecture.
Bank Street House has brought to life our Covid-conceived vision to transform how we live, work, entertain, and unwind. The house blends the heritage terrace with a bold addition, offering us the perfect balance of openness, privacy, and serenity in the heart of the city. Every space holds an element of surprise, from playful design quirks to breathtaking city views. The kitchen is the home’s social hub, creating an immersive hospitality experience, while the powder rooms are unique. Whether hosting, enjoying family moments, working from home, or soaking in light, the house isn’t just a home—it’s an experience.
