Media summary

EJE in collaboration with Jodie Dixon Architect are proud to have been a part of the brief development, design & documentation of Baiyangbaiyaang, the new Residential Eating Disorders Centre (REDC) on Awabakal country, Charlestown, in partnership with Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), which is the first of its kind in NSW.

The collaboration between EJE & Jodie Dixon led to a deeply considered design process shaping a facility that supports holistic therapeutic recovery and the emotional wellbeing for residents. Being nestled in natural vegetation, but with all the conveniences of Newcastle & the Hunter at its doorstep, this facility provides a vital recovery centre serving our local region, and the wider state. Bridging the gap between community-based care and hospital admission.

The first public service in NSW Baiyangbaiyaang fills a critical gap in the stepped care model of service provision for consumers with eating disorders.

Designed in partnership with staff & consumers with lived experience of an eating disorder, Baiyangbaiyaang is improving the health & wellbeing of people with an eating disorder, and the lives of their families, carers, supportive others & communities by providing access to evidence based person-centred care within a home like environment to support recovery, involving families & carers.

The design of the centre provides:

  • Connection
  • Cultural safety
  • Empowerment
  • Meaningful engagement
  • Safety & Privacy
  • Nature & natural light
  • Homely & flexible
  • Accessibility
  • Grounding
