Media summary

Bold and stylish, the Baby Burt Residence contributes to architectural vitality in the North Perth streetscapes as the inner city adopts a more progressive approach to residential density.

Baby Burt's southern street frontage shows the first floor as a cantilevered, concrete rectangular tube, softened with a curved battened enclosure that picks up on the mixed materiality of the textured base.

The design uses the site's fall to the north to increase volume in key living areas and provide views of the outdoor entertaining area, landscaped gardens and the pool.

Baby Burt centres the clients' lifestyles and love of entertaining, cooking and socialising, with clearly defined and separated bedrooms, living spaces and service areas, within a framework that could adapt to larger family uses.

Landscaping, skylights, planting on structure and privacy screens work together to connect the interior with nature while providing sustainability benefits in reduced energy costs and solar protection.

David and the Hillam team have created a home that feels calm and relaxing, a retreat from the hustle of every day life, as though we were on holiday every day. Friends have affectionately dubbed it Hotel Helean!

There are many considered design moments throughout the house, and the simplicity of these resonates most: easy breezes, thoughtful light and shadow, the raw materiality and generosity of space tempered with warmth.

We are especially grateful for the support after our original builder went into administration – handing over a bespoke project partway through to another builder would have been impossible.
