Project summary

35 Hinder Street is a mixed use retail and office complex located in the developing town centre of Gungahlin adjacent to the new Light Rail terminus. The building is an exemplar of sustainability, energy efficiency and wellness befitting its status as the region’s first Commonwealth Government departmental headquarters.

Characterised by its strong rectilinear form and primarily glazed façade with vertical louvres, the building engages the town centre with bold angular reformations and varied materials at its corners to invite entry to the building and the developing precinct beyond. A softer interior architecture of curves and natural materials culminates in a double height atrium featuring conical triangular skylights creates a calm yet dynamic contemporary workplace for the occupants.

The engaging urban form and architectural clarity give 35 Hinder Street significant prominence within the town centre and sets a standard for its future development that is based in urbanism, sustainability and wellness.

Lockbridge appointed Guida Mosley Brown Architects to design a purpose-built office for Defence Housing Australia (DHA). The building outcome provides a strong form and character which anchors the Gungahlin Town Centre from the east and provides a welcoming entrance for DHA staff and visitors.

The interconnected central staircase leads to flexible congregation spaces which are naturally filled with light by the feature atriums. This feature encourages occupants to travel throughout the building and participate in group-based activities.

DHA has provided feedback to Lockbridge that the building has provided their staff with a welcoming office environment, which has improved staff productivity.
