Architects are always thinking about the future.
As Creative Director of the 2006 RAIA National Conference, I have chosen to focus specifically on the issues that have critical importance for our future - Housing, Urban Design, Social + Cultural Issues, and the Environment.
I believe that architecture has many voices, so in selecting the speakers for 'the future is now!' conference I have approached architects who are seriously looking towards the future, but in different ways, with different means, and with very different philosophies. I have invited speakers, both Australian and International, who will address these issues with skill, intelligence and insight; speakers who will showcase a range of ideas, experiences, and examples outside of the usual local experience; speakers with visionary ideas, and a positive and inspired approach to the future of architecture.
Architecture will be discussed as a holistic pursuit, examining interrelationships between the land, buildings, housing, urban design, politics, the environment, and of course, people.
Alternative approaches to Housing, including low-cost and social housing, will be explored by speakers.
Urban Design will look at all of the separate elements of land, building and infrastructure that constitute our built environment. Speakers will also examine the idea that successful Urban Design only exists through its interaction with, and effect upon, people.
The natural Environment will be examined as the base from which all architecture is built, and as an integral part of the built environment. Speakers will address new and alternative approaches for the future creation of sustainable buildings and environments.
The Social + Cultural implications of our future built environment will be explored through individual successful projects.
Speakers will showcase their ideas through examples from all parts of the world, explaining their small and large projects in detail, revealing their examination of the future condition.
