Introduction from Creative Directors

Facebook communities are constituted in ways that transcend traditional cultural boundaries. These new technological spaces allow for constellational amalgams of ‘friends’, mini-cultures that provide multiple view-points on our environmentally (and, more recently, financially) challenged and changing world.

Facebook communities are just one example of the complex contextual weave within which the processes and material of architecture take place. An aspect of that taking place is the way in which architecture navigates between multiple and even parallax perspectives in forming a believable ‘tale’. It is the proposition of this conference that the architectural ‘tale’, is a fantasy that can enable our meaningful engagement with our challenging and changing contemporary condition.   We have invited architects and thinkers to consider their own work in relation to this proposition.

City of Melbourne

Melbourne, is a city that prides itself on the quality of its design and cultural experience.

The city that started with few assets, has grown into a world leader in not only architectural design but also fashion, the arts and theatre.

Since the early 1980s, this process has been nurtured through a strong urban design strategy and is built on the intrinsic characteristics of Melbourne.  Its lanes are not a project, but a realisation of an asset that grew out of speculation in the nineteenth century.

Its architecture has it roots in the Gold Rush.  These strengths have been taken forward and developed at each stage to create new interpretations of Melbourne.

Federation Square, for example is not a building, but a series of lanes with activity at ground level that leads onto a quality public space.  These are the qualities that make Melbourne a great city.

They are the qualities of subtle and intelligent design.
