UIA Berlin 2002 Congress 22-26 July 2002
Now, more than ever, does it become important, to address the critical issues that face our profession. Now that we know that the world is heading towards an unsustainable built environment which is becoming vulnerable in more ways than one. It is a clear that our profession is at a crossroads and that Berlin, this July, will be the ideal forum where we can dialogue. The challenge that we are facing clearly is this: Can we as a profession lead society towards what we believe should be the architectural, urban, social and environmental status quo of the future? We believe that we can, and that the UIA Berlin Congress, with the contributions of all, will successfully respond to this challenge. By Vassilis Sgoutas - UIA President

RAIA Symposium and Journal Launch, Melbourne 27 August 2002

Its objective is to provide government, industry and the architectural profession with a range of critical thought and case studies that will provide the impetus for a fresh evaluation of our cities and regional areas and provide viable, sustainable and design-led propositions for the future.

RAIA Research
In the most recent RAIA Membership Survey, members expressed a clear vision for the RAIA, with enhancement of the profile of the profession and recognition of small practice and sole practitioner issues, top priorities.
Members also participated in 2002's first Staff Levels survey. Results suggest that with the decrease in non-residential building approvals reported at the end of 2001, the beginning of this year has seen a downturn in architectural staffing levels; with an upward swing predicted.
Your participation in our surveys defines the strength and veracity of our research and we value your ideas and feedback.
For copies of research reports, please access www.architecture.com.au, phone (03) 9650 2477, fax (03) 9650 3364, or email: practice@raia.com.au.

Launch of 2002 RAIA & Colorbond® Steel Student Biennale Exhibition
The 2002 RAIA & COLORBOND® steel Student Biennale Exhibition was launched on 4 June 2002 at the RAIA Convention at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
Hard copies of the 12 Finalists' work were displayed and, to highlight the 2002 competition's transition to the electronic age, an audio-visual presentation of the Finalists' work was produced, providing a dynamic introduction to the Launch. Graham Jahn, RAIA National President, outlined the history of the competition.
Nikolauz Cheong Senglim, University of Melbourne, and Marko Damic, University of NSW, were announced as the joint winners of the 2002 COLORBOND® steel Biennale Prize. They will receive their shared prize of $8000 at the RAIA National Awards in Sydney in October 2002.
The Student Biennale Exhibition will be displayed at each Australian architecture school/program later this year to coincide with the publication of the 2002 Biennale catalogue.

New book on the influences on Tasmanian Architecture
Island communities around the world are showing a renewed confidence and understanding of their special identities and way of life. Architecture from the Edge, a new book by Tasmanian Architects Barry McNeil and Leigh Woolley, reflects upon the growing movement by examining the special 'Tasmanian-ness' of the State's 20th Century Architecture. The book is available from Architext.

Architecture for Humanity Competition
In 1999, Architecture for Humanity, a volunteer non-profit organization founded for the promotion of architectural and design solutions to global, social and humanitarian problems was established.
In that year they launched their first venture, an international competition to design five-year transitional housing for Kosovo's returning refugees. With more than 200 entries from 30 countries, the competition was an overwhelming success. This competition resulted in two prototypes being built and an international tour of finalists and selected designs in the US and Europe.
This year, they are calling for Architects to submit entries for their second project, the Mobile HIV/AIDS health clinic for Africa.
For further information on entering this competition go to www.architectureforhumanity.org or Cameron Sinclair (founder and director of Architecture for humanity).

Timber Technology
In response to requests from timber specifiers and building designers, the timber industry commissioned the University of Adelaide to provide authoritative estimates of the R-values for common building elements incorporated into timber-framed constructions. The document 'R-values for timber framed building elements' provides a comprehensive Australia-wide coverage of the common R-values for roof/ceiling, wall and floor elements, including the heat flow into, and out from, the buildings under consideration.
Published in April 2002, this 43-page document can be readily down loaded from the www.timber.org.au/Energy.htm

Building Industry Consulting Services
According to the Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI), a non profit global telecommunications association, many of the organisations responsible for the design of telecommunications infrastructure in buildings in this country are not formerly educated in the unique requirements of IT and telecommunications within buildings. The end result are communications infrastructures that are not standards compliant and don't ultimately meet the needs of the users. BICSI's has a range of publications and related professional qualifications that relate to the design of telecommunications infrastructure for buildings, both commercial and residential.
