Open Architectural Competition - STUDENT HUB - The Heart of the Campus!

Location of the Hub

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) wishes to invite Architects to present their designs for the Student Hub, which will provide a living heart for its Parramatta Campus. UWS would like to draw ideas from a wide range of architectural firms and achieve an exceptional proposal by supporting an open architectural design competition. Any person who is a Registered Architect may enter this competition. The Royal Australian Institute of Architects has endorsed this competition. UWS is one of Australia’s largest universities with over 35,000 students and 2,500 staff working across ten sites and six teaching campuses in the Greater Western Sydney Region. The Parramatta Campus is strategically important in the overall UWS campus.

The delivery of infrastructure, due to significant funding for the Parramatta Campus Development in recent and current Capital Works Budgets has been the focus of much activity. This process began in earnest with the construction of Building EA, the New Teaching Building, designed by Hassell. One of the next major approved projects will be the Student Hub. This will form the new social nucleus for student life on the campus and will be responding to the students’ desire for modern state-of-the-art facilities and will be incorporating the historic landmarks of the Boiler House and Chimney Stack.

The Student Hub will co-locate a number of existing campus functions, currently located in surrounding buildings such as student services, the cafeteria and bookstore. Other appropriate functions have been included after surveys of students and staff. Among the Competition Jurors are acclaimed Architects, Tony Caro (Tony Caro Architecture), Richard Francis-Jones (Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp) and John Wardle (John Wardle Architects). A competition package will be sent to all Entrants on Wednesday, 20th June 2007. Submissions are due on Monday, 13th August 2007.

The Competition Director is Frank Stanisic. The winner of the competition will be awarded the commission for the project. Construction of the Student Hub should commence as soon as the design and documentation phases conclude in order to service students in the academic year commencing 2009.

To register for the competition Entrants are required to complete the attached registration form and return it by email to studenthub@uws.edu.au. On lodgement of this form, entrants will receive an Identification Number by email from the Competition Director. This number must be included in all future correspondence.
