Northern Territory
Overview
The chapter continued to work closely with government, industry and community groups. Chapter representatives have been actively involved on the Building Appeals Board, Building Advisory Committee, Northern Territory Architects Registration Board, Alice in Ten Built Environment Committee, the Building Practitioners Board, the Public Art Grant Program Committee, quarterly meetings with the CEO of the Department of Planning & Infrastructure and the Chief Minister’s business roundtable meetings.
Advocacy
Further advocacy was achieved through comments and submissions on the Building Act, utilisation of the NT Government Architect, Panel Contracts, Creating Darwin’s Future and the NT Planning Scheme.
The NT chapter’s lodgement of a formal objection with the Development Consent Authority against a high rise development in the city generated vibrant debate among local and NT government representatives, and the community. The development application before the Authority was subsequently refused.
Architecture Awards
Congratulations to the RAIA members who submitted projects for the 2006 Northern Territory Architecture Awards. Thank you to the jurors John Wilkins, Brendan Meney and Sue Bradley for their invaluable contribution and commitment. Once again Steven Huntingford’s orchestration of a terrific awards function created continual raucous response from the audience and left them looking forward to the possibilities of 2007.
Continuing Education
The chapter hosted five national continuing professional development sessions, as well as presenting sessions on pre-registration information and managing your risk. Winner of the 2006 Gold Medal, Kerry Hill, presented to a large audience at the NT Museum.
