RAIA Robin Boyd Residential Buildings Award: Winners and commendation recipients: 2006-1981

Date: 26 October 2006

The RAIA Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings
is Australia’s most prestigious annual architectural residential housing award. It is awarded to houses that set new benchmarks in terms of meeting the client’s needs, responding to its site, and providing shelter which is at the leading edge of house design.

The 2006 RAIA Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings has been awarded to St. Andrews Beach House on the Mornington Peninsular by Sean Godsell Architects. It is the first time Sean Godsell has been awarded the coveted prize, and the first time a Victorian residence has won the top award since 2000. Sean previously received a commendation in this category in 2000 for the Carter/Tucker House.

Architects receiving the award are regarded as the best in Australia. Since its establishment in 1981, high profile recipients have included Peter Stutchbury of Stutchbury + Pape, Neil Durbach and Camilla Block of Durbach Block Architects, Glenn Murcutt, Kerry Hill, Alexander Tzannes, Alex Popov, Gabrielle Poole, Dale Jones-Evans, Lindsay and Kerry Clare of Architectus, Ken Latona and Graham Jahn.

While the award recognises private residences, their outstanding design excellence has resulted in many of these homes being widely recognised as residential icons. These include Alex Popov’s Griffin House in Sydney’s Castlecrag, Kerry Hill’s Ogilvie House on the Sunshine Coast and Glenn Murcutt’s NSW South Coast house.
