In 1972 he founded Denton Corker Marshall with Bill Corker and Barrie Marshall in Melbourne. This firm has become one of the most significant and successful Australian-owned international design practices, with offices in Melbourne, Brisbane, Jakarta and London. The practice currently employs more than 120 people. Denton Corker Marshall is widely acclaimed both in Australia and internationally for the high calibre of its architecture and urban design, which is the subject of several prestigious contemporary publications and attracts many prominent design awards. John Denton's principal interests in both architecture and urban design have shaped a range of projects over many years: His early planning and urban design projects include significant commissions for the then National Capital Development Commission, the Albury Wodonga Development Corporation and the Bathurst Orange Development Corporation. He was Director in Charge of the new Australian Embassies in Beijing and Tokyo (where he was also a member of the Australian Government Task Force charged with negotiations for redevelopment of the existing embassy site), More recently he has been Director in Charge of a series of projects for Monash University, Caulfield Campus, spanning a period of 12 years. He was Director in Charge of the Melbourne Museum project, a commission won by the practice in an international, open design competition. He was also Director in Charge of Anzac Hall, and now of the East Building and Gallery Redevelopment, the most recent in a series of projects carried out for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra over the past 20 years. He is currently Director in Charge of the new Civil Justice Centre Project in Manchester (UK) as well as directing a range of master-planning and residential projects in China. Regular travel to Denton Corker Marshall offices and projects overseas contributes an international perspective to his extensive, broadly based understanding of urban and architectural design issues. He has sat on the Chairs of Architecture Selection Committee at the University of Melbourne and has represented Graduate Architects on the University's Convocation Committee. In 1998 he was a member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects' National Education Visiting Panel at Sydney University's School of Architecture. John Denton has also sat on the Architectural Course Advisory Committees of both Melbourne and RMIT Universities. He is Victorian State Government Representative on the Board of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and is a Director of VESKI, the Victorian Endowment for Science Knowledge and Innovation. For a number of years he has been Deputy President of the Australian Print Workshop, a non-profit organisation supported by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council. John Denton lectures on Denton Corker Marshall's work to schools of architecture, professional institutes in Australia and abroad, and as a keynote speaker. He also conforms to the notion of the scholarly practitioner, having taught from time to time in undergraduate and masters programmes at the University of Melbourne and RMIT. He has lectured at the Architecture League in New York and was a Visiting Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of the Arts. He has given the Lloyd Rees Memorial Lecture at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney. He has lectured at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and at the Glasgow 1999 Festival of Architecture and Design. In 1996 John Denton, Bill Corker and Barrie Marshall were made the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallists for that year, the most prestigious award the RAIA bestows. John is also a Life Fellow, Royal Australian Institute of Architects; Member, Royal Institute of British Architects; Member, Planning Institute of Australia; Member, Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Fellow, Royal Society of the Arts.
