About CPD
Institute members are required by the Code of Professional Conduct to provide professional services conscientiously and competently and are encouraged to improve their professional knowledge and competence through participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
Members are also expected to maintain a broad awareness of developments across the profession and to have current knowledge of those areas in which they are active. Members who are employers have an additional responsibility to foster the CPD of their employees.
CPD Policy
CPD activities have defined learning outcomes and are linked to one or more of the four AACA Competency Standards of Design, Documentation, Project Management and Practice Management.
'Formal' CPD activities either include formal assessment or have what is defined as 'significant interaction' between presenter and participant. All formal CPD is self-assessed and should be kept as part of your records. 'Informal' CPD involves no formal assessment or significant interaction between presenter and participant.
The Institute's CPD Policy can be found here.
A Joint CPD/CE Policy with the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) was agreed and endorsed by National Council in March 2005 and was revised in 2007. The revised AACA and Australian Institute of Architects Joint CPD Policy can be found here.

CPD Points and Compulsory CPD
The Architects Registration Boards of NSW, Tasmania, WA and QLD require all registered architects to gain 20 points of CPD (at least 10 formal) across at least two of the AACA competencies. Each state has their own specific requirements and CPD polisies so check with your local board for your requirements.

Many Australian Institute of Architects members support the Institute and the profession by volunteering their time and expertise. These activities may count towards CPD requirements of the Institute or the jurisdiction you are registered in.

Recording of CPD
Architects are required to manage their own CPD records and can create their own management system. The Institute also provides a sample CPD record form to assist members, available for download here. |
