International Affairs

Overview
Australian architects were well represented on the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) thanks to the efforts of former RAIA National President Louise Cox as UIA Vice-President Region IV, Asia and Oceania.

Highlights

  • UIA Celebration of Cities Ideas Competition was run nationally, with Brisbane architect Kevin Hayes Architects winning the Region IV prize.

  • UNESCO-UIA validation system for architectural education was trialled by Region IV representatives, who acted as observers at the Australian Architectural Accreditation System national visits.

  • UNESCO-UIA charter for architectural education was updated with global contributions, many from Australia through the RAIA’s national education committee, and will be considered for ratification by the UIA Assembly in July 2005.

  • Liaison initiated between UIA and Docomomo International is investigating sharing the UIA 20th Century Architectural Heritage website. The UIA Region IV heritage work programme is preparing a monologue of heritage projects for a presentation at Istanbul 2005. The RAIA’s heritage sub-committee and Docomomo Australia Inc are working on 40 contributions for this programme.
