David ParkenThe RAIA is delighted and honoured to be a key participant in the Year of the Built Environment (YBE) in 2004.

The events and activities of the YBE 2004 will demonstrate how important it is for the Australian community to live, work and play in a well-designed built environment.

Good design, however, is not just about aesthetically pleasing buildings. The YBE 2004 gives us an opportunity to highlight the vital current issues that confront us, such as sustainability, water usage, access for all, quality of life and protection of the environment. It gives us the opportunity to reinforce the significance of these issues with governments at all levels and with the wider community.

The unanimous support of the Australian Government and the State and Territory Governments has been crucial in gaining support for the YBE 2004. This support will be pivotal in securing positive policy outcomes from the YBE 2004, especially because the State and Territory governments have the mandate for planning and construction legislation.

The process of building cities and towns is incredibly complex, involving a myriad of diverse participants, particularly at the local government level. As part of its role in the staging of the YBE 2004, the RAIA has drawn together the many related professional associations and construction and design industry organisations to ensure a whole-of-industry approach to the YBE 2004.

I encourage all visitors to this website to visit links in their home State or Territory and to participate in one or more of the many activities on offer. Use the opportunities being provided in 2004 to find out more about your built environment and how you can have a say in its future.
