It guides how land in Brisbane can be used and developed, including provisions for building form and design. It will help Brisbane plan for infrastructure to support growth and create a more diversified economy while continuing to protect our city's enviable way of life.

"Beyond Patronage" - Considering the Future of Architecture... lecture + workshop
Your chance in Brisbane to hear the keynote from the "Transform: Altering the Future of Architecture" conference

Event Convenor: Dr Naomi Stead, UQ School of Architecture

Keynote speaker Lori Brown will be giving an evening public lecture in Brisbane on June 3, as a follow-up to the Melbourne conference Transform: Altering the Future of Architecture.

Architecture is in the midst of substantial change. How architects define themselves, how practices operate, and the range of roles and types of work pursued - all is up for grabs.

It's also time for a more gender-inclusive profession, one that assists women and men to better balance professional and personal lives, to realise their full potential, and to stay in the profession.

Lori's Brisbane keynote, 'Beyond Patronage', will discuss possible futures for our profession that move away from an emphasis on patronage, that our discipline has long been reliant upon.

This keynote will be followed by an interactive workshop, seeking feedback and input into a series of draft guidelines towards more equitable architectural workplaces, currently under development by the research project 'Equity and Diversity in the Australian Architecture Profession: Women, Work and Leadership.'

Following a consultation period, these guidelines will be released jointly by Parlour and the Australian Institute of Architects, in late-2013.

Come along to spend the evening with some fantastic thinkers, researchers and architects, and add your voice to the discussion.

Event Program:

The program will have two halves - a keynote lecture by Lori Brown, followed by an interactive workshop, with participation from the audience, giving input and feedback on a series of draft guides to equitable workplace practice in architecture. Come along, have your say, and make a contribution to a more equal profession.
About the Speaker:
Lori Brown works at the intersections of architecture, art, geography, and women's studies, and is involved in architectural practice, research and teaching. All her work emerges from the belief that architecture can participate in and impact people's everyday lives. Her design, speculative work, and teaching all engage with the larger idea of broadening the discourse and involvement of architecture in our world. Focusing particularly on the relationships between architecture and social justice issues, she has currently placed emphasis on gender and its impact upon spatial relationships.

This event is an appropriate CPD activity which will contribute 2 Formal points toward the annual BOAQ requirements.

ArchiBUSINESS - Dispute Resolution
A presentation by Chris Whitelaw, Barrister and Mediator with the Commercial Disputes Management Centre.

In this presentation Chris Whitelaw will be showing you how most commercial type disputes, including disputes between architects, between an architect and a client, between an architect and a project partner can, if managed and handled the right way, employing the right philosophy, psychology and dispute management and resolution strategies be resolved early, relatively fast, at a relatively low cost, without resort to litigation and without damaging valuable relationships.

The presenter is the Principal of the Commercial Disputes Management Centre. More information about his philosophy and psychology which he applies to managing commercial disputes is shared on his website www.chriswhitelaw.com.au

Chris established the Commercial Disputes Management Centre (CDMC) to get his message out to more business owners and professionals.

In this presentation tailored for architects, you will take away the following key learnings:
The genesis of many disputes;
How to avoid or minimise the risk of disputes happening and getting out of control;
How to bullet proof your business against the risk of being forced into litigation;
How to effectively manage any dispute that does arise and stop it escalating out of control;
How to select the right professional to best manage and resolve your disputes
How to forward plan and strategise to protect yourself and your business.

The ethos of CDMC is expressed in this way:

"Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo in the field of dispute management and dispute resolution.

"We believe in thinking differently and 'outside the box'.

"The way we challenge the status quo is by using strategies, technologies and infrastructure (including online) to make it easier and cheaper for business people, companies and governments to capture, contain, manage, de-esacalate and resolve their disputes without litigation and without damaging important relationships.

"Our systems are, relatively speaking, low cost and user-friendly. They are designed to be flexible and versatile and can suit either the needs of individuals, corporations or managers of government departments. CDMC offers a truly neutral and level playing field for all. It makes 'ADR' (Assisted Dispute Resolution) available and accessible to all at an affordable price and operates to minimise recourse to expensive, time consuming and stressful litigious processes.

Presenter Bio:

Chris Whitelaw graduated Brisbane Grammar School in 1973, completed his Arts/Law degree at the Australian National University in 1980 and commenced his legal career in Sydney in 1982.

Over the last 30 years he has mainly specialised in negligence law, professional negligence suits and commercial and civil law. He has worked in all facets of the litigation system as a solicitor, barrister and arbitrator.

For many years now Chris has specialised in and advocated for pre-action early dispute management/resolution. He has been applying this approach to a variety of disputes and this includes building and construction disputes with considerable success. These disputes have from time to time included developers, builders, architects, engineers and others.

Achieving your Value: Engaging with your Clients
How can architects better engage with their clients to achieve the highest possible value?

More than ever, the architect's competitiveness hinges on his/her ability to manage long-term client relationships for a successful practice. Emerging trends are dramatically affecting client relationships and are creating new opportunities for individuals to collaborate across many boundaries.

Gretel Bakker, Managing Director of Performance Frontiers, examines how architects can embrace these new trends and lead the way in establishing collaborative successful relationships with their existing and potential clients.

This session seeks to provide attendees with the following learning outcomes:
- Appreciating the importance of the clients' business, the uniqueness of their culture and responding to their requirements
- Creating an awareness of deep attunement and listening to the client's needs and generating opportunities where one can add value
- Staying buoyant with resistance and rejection
- Reaching beyond the traditional client/architect relationship
- Navigating the relationship to influence, move and guide a client

Speaker: Gretel Bakker, Managing Director of Performance Frontiers

Gretel has a wealth of experience working with a diverse range of industry sectors including local and national architecture firms. Drawing upon a diverse knowledge base of the arts, business, leadership and psychological theory, Gretel has great success in facilitating significant and sustainable change with leaders and teams in organizations.

For registered architects, this seminar provides two (2) formal continuing professional development (CPD) points toward the annual BOAQ requirements.
