BURGMANN ANGLICAN SCHOOL GUNGAHLIN

CATERGORY: PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE

Burgmann Anglican School Gungahlin is a Preschool to Year 12 school which has been developed over a period of 12 years. It is a unique school that incorporates various pedagogical developments and changes within a flexible matrix of spaces. This matrix has been developed like a town and promotes community pride and interaction, age related changes in scale, adaptability, environmental innovation, flexible learning spaces and urban habitat. The school is a web of identifiable sub-schools or neighbourhoods. This sets the frame for the more detailed design of spaces at a lower personal level. It is important that the overall concept has a large palette of shapes and materials for simulation. Peripheral stimulation provides an embodied relationship with spaces establishing connections and attachment to place. The school has become a unique habitat in many ways incorporating numerous sustainable technologies to reduce water, material and energy consumption across the site and extensive native landscaping and ponds have increased the ecological diversity in the grounds of the school. This has a direct impact on the education of the students in the school. Burgmann School lives within its environment - a response to climate, context and the complexity of life.
