NSW E-Alert CPD - 8 June

In 2012 we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Sulman Medal for public architecture.

The Sir John Sulman Medal and Diploma 1932 -2012: 80 years of architectural excellence

The Sir John Sulman Medal and Diploma are the most prestigious architectural honours in New South Wales and the oldest in Australia. They are named for the English-born architect, Sir John Sulman (1849-1934), who spent his adult life engaged in architectural practice, education and town planning. In his last years he positioned himself as a public commentator on architecture, art and the emerging discipline of planning through journalism, committee membership and lobbying. He donated the money for the Medal in 1931, three years before his death.
The Sulman Medal is awarded annually by the New South Wales Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects for an architectural work of outstanding merit. Alterations and additions are eligible - the Art Gallery of NSW, Powerhouse Museum, Wharf Theatre, Queen Victoria Building and The Mint have all been honoured - but in most cases the Medal has been awarded to new work. The architect receives a diploma and a bronze plaque which may also be attached to the winning building.

To mark this anniversary, guests at this year’s awards presentation event on
June 28 will view a short audio visual presentation of the Sulman Medal winners from 1932 to 2012 and on July 3 a presentation by immediate past Government Architect Peter Mould will provide a fascinating insight and overview of this long standing award. A further program of Sulman celebrations during the Sydney Architecture Festival in October and November will be announced in the coming months.

At this year’s award presentation evening on
Thursday June 28 we have opened the invitation to include the students of architecture who will enjoy their own SONA Mezzanine event space, and for the first time entries by the tertiary award winners will sit alongside display panels of work by our top architects. All entries from this year will be on view.

We invite you to join in the celebration of architectural achievement. Purchase your ticket to the awards night at Luna Park on Thursday June 28. This cocktail and dinner function is for everyone and open to all. Click here to book your ticket.

Sydney Morning Herald - SPECTRUM

The Sydney Morning Herald is writing an article for Spectrum. It is about the travel photo albums of architects and links to an exhibition of travel photographs taken by Harry Seidler. Louise Schwartzkoff, journalist from SMH, is interested in the notion that architects travel differently from the rest of us, collecting photographs of buildings like souvenirs.

If you are interested in talking with the SMH and having your photographs published as part of an online gallery please let us know on nsw@architecture.com.au
