This page contains a quick guide to getting the most out of the Institute's architecture.com.au project gallery.
What do you want to look at?
The database that runs the gallery can be searched or browsed in many different ways. It has been design to be as flexible as possible without becoming too complicated.
The simplest way to browse through projects on the site is to choose a category. To do this, simply click on one of the headings or subheadings. This will generate a list of results with thumbnails, which can be clicked to get more detail about each project.
Narrow your choice
To narrow your search (before you click on the category or subcategory) scroll down to display options. Here you can change the way the results display (choose between a 'List with thumbnails' or the image based 'image matrix'). You can also select different states and years. The year recorded for a project is actually the year it was entered into the Institutes Architecture Awards program, and can range from 1981 to now.
In this section you can also choose to limit your search to award-winning architecture only. Since 1999, all entries in the national award program are included in the gallery. The institute architecture awards attract around 500 entries per year. These are judged at the Chapter (state) level, with the winners then being judged for a national award. You can narrow your search to state winners or national winners or both.
Viewing results as a slideshow
Once you have a set of results from a search it will be displayed as a list of thumbnails (small pictures) and an extract of information on each project or an 'image matrix' if that option was selected. At either of these points you can initiate an automated slideshow by selecting the 'slideshow' link in the top right of the page.
When in a slideshow, use the controls at the bottom to adjust the speed, pause, go forward or back. Clicking on a project picture will close the slideshow and load the project detail. The slideshow can be started again by clicking same 'slideshow' button at the top right of the page.
The project in detail
Each project is illustrated with between one to four photographs. To enlarge the smaller images, simply click on them. 'In the Architects Words' and 'Details' are the project description and acreditation information supplied with the awards entry.
In many cases the database will find a match with a firm in the Institute's popular 'Find an architect' service (based around the Australian Directory of Architects and Building Designers, ADABD). In this case current contact details for the architect are included as well as a link to the firm's profile.
