NEWCASTLE CHAIRMAN REPORT FOR 2011

2011 saw the Newcastle Division continue to provide a multitude of activities that support our members and our industry through links with the practices of the region, the local authorities and the University of Newcastle.

  • Glen Spicer as outgoing chair and current committee member participated in the State Visiting Panel review of University of Newcastle School of Architecture.

  • The Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards continue as a successful initiative working in conjunction with the five local Councils to administer the awards, with this year’s event held in Port Stephens with over 150 attending.

  • 2011 was also our inaugural year for the Newcastle Division Architecture Awards. Twenty eight entries, five awards and five commendations, along with 100 people at the awards dinner has been an auspicious start.

  • For the last six years the Newcastle Division, through the dedication of Peter Kemp, has provided the PALS course for regional students to assist them in the final examination process.

  • Refuel, CPD events, joint lecture series with the University of Newcastle and participation on industry review panels for Council DCPs, all continues to be part of our annual activities.

  • The Newcastle Division is also proud to announce the Les Reedman Book, ‘Early Architects of the Hunter Region’ has currently sold over 400 copies, and the committee is looking at the next 40 years from 1940 - 1980.

  • As the Newcastle Committee Chair I will be meeting with Country Division Committee on Saturday 3rd December to discuss planning for regional NSW members in 2012.

Looking forward to some exciting things in 2012, including the move to new office premises in Bolton Street.

Regards

Stuart Landrigan
