Rocky Hills Retreat - Rosevear Architects
Originally conceived and developed as a private bush retreat, Rocky Hills Retreat has developed to be become guest accommodation associated with the Avalon Coastal Retreat at Rocky Hills on the east coast of Tasmania. The retreat enjoys a solitary hillside perch amongst 124 hectares of eucalypt forest overlooking Great Oyster Bay, Freycinet Peninsula and Maria Island. In response to the power and drama of the location, the approach developed with the owner is unashamedly bold and the concept uncomplicated; to shelter one quietly alone in the bush, focused on the changing moods of the landscape through day and night. The construction and material palette is robust and modest concentrating on longevity, moderation of maintenance, and defence against an extreme bushfire risk.
