TNT 8 June 2010 - Suntrap to Zero Carbon - A Short History of Residential Climate Design in Australia by Tone Wheeler

The passive solar house movement in Australia started immediately after WWII and has had a chequered history to date. Modest modernist case study type houses gave way to “passive solar” with its cousin “active solar”; low energy solutions morphed into over-glazed cross ventilated “tents”, sustainability arrived, and zero carbon houses. Through all the name changes there were slavish copies of inappropriate US and European homes, some now regarded as the most progressive and important green design in the world. Tone will trawl the recent past to find the forgotten and unknown pearls of architecture.
