Architecture Awards
The annual Architecture Awards are now closed and we have had 31 different projects entered in 33 categories this year, which is the highest number of entries for the last 10 years.
The main awards Jury is Elvio Brianese (Jury Chair), Nigel Bertram (interstate juror), Geoff Clark (from UTAS and Troppo Architects), Jonathan Pyefinch and Lindsay Tuffin (journalist and editor of the Tasmanian Times ). The jury has had an initial briefing and will now be busy viewing all the entry information in preparation for the presentations by entrants on March 28. For the timetable of the presentations, click here.
Just a reminder to SONA members and first year graduate members that entries in the SWT Blythe Student Prize closes on March 27, 2009. For the entry form click here.

Outgoing President and Immediate Past President
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Jim Jones, on behalf of all members and staff, for his service to the Institute over the last 2 years as the Chapter President. He will officially become the Immediate Past President when Richard Crawford takes up the reins at the National Council meeting on March 26. Jim has been a great representative and advocate on behalf of the Institute on a number of industry and government committees, at many meetings and forums and now deserves a well earned break from the pressures of the presidency. He will remain on Chapter Council as the Immediate Past President. Neal Mackintosh will cease to be the Immediate Past President and will step down from Chapter Council, also deserving a well earned break after many years of continued service on Council. Both Jim and Neal were thanked by Chapter Council and were presented with gifts at the March Chapter Council meeting. I'd also like to thank Heffernan Button Voss and Jawsarchitects for their support of Jim and Neal during their terms of office.

Job Share Position

I am currently interviewing candidates to job share with Elsha Pye in the Finance and Adminisitration Officer position at the Chapter. If you know anyone suitable, whom may be interested in that role in a part-time capacity, please call or email me with their contact details as soon as possible.

Shared Space Hobart
An exhibition of RMIT Architecture student projects for Sullivans Cove

The Studio 'Shared Space Hobart' was run as an upper level architectural design studio within the Architecture Program at RMIT University. The studio took as its starting point the notion of 'shared space' which is a term in use to describe the flexible and non functionally-specific nature of the flat ex-industrial apron of Sullivans Cove. This notion was explored through a broader urban agenda of discovering and developing a network of micro-urban spaces within the cove and city of Hobart which might extend the potential for sharing and exchange between different socio-cultural subgroups of the public.
Twelve students participated in the studio and after initial background research and took part in a three-day workshop in Hobart in April focusing on observational and analytical primary analysis of the city and cove. Leigh Woolley, Megan Baynes and Peter Wilmott gave presentations and critiqued the students’ on-site fieldwork observations and initial design responses. The work was exhibited at RMIT in July 2008 and again in October as part of the Design Research Institute’s Urban Liveability Collective Exhibition.
