The Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings is Australia’s most prestigious annual architectural residential housing award. It is awarded to houses that set new benchmarks in terms of meeting the client’s needs, responding to its site, and providing shelter which is at the leading edge of house design.
The 2008 Australian Institute of Architects Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture has been awarded to the Klein Bottle House on the Mornington Peninsula by McBride Charles Ryan. It is the first Robin Boyd win for the Melbourne-based practice, but the third consecutive year a Victorian residence on the Mornington Peninsular has won the top award. Paul Morgan Architects and Sean Godsell received the top award in 2007 and 2006 respectively for the Cape Schanck and St Andrews Beach houses.
Architects receiving the award are regarded as the best in Australia. Since its establishment in 1981, high profile recipients have included Peter Stutchbury, Neil Durbach and Camilla Block, Glenn Murcutt, Kerry Hill, Alexander Tzannes, Alex Popov, Gabrielle Poole, Lindsay and Kerry Clare, Ken Latona and Graham Jahn.
Many award-winning homes are now recognised as residential icons. These include Alex Popov’s Griffin House in Sydney’s Castlecrag, Kerry Hill’s Ogilvie House on the Sunshine Coast and Glenn Murcutt’s NSW South Coast house.
