Northern Territory Chapter: President’s Report
The Chapter continued to work closely with government, industry and community groups. Chapter representatives have been actively involved on the Urban Design Advisory Panel, Building Appeals Board, Building Advisory Committee, Northern Territory Architects Registration Board, the Building Practitioners Board, the Public Art Grant Program Committee, and participate in quarterly meetings with the CEO of the Department of Planning & Infrastructure and the Chief Minister’s business roundtable meetings.
Advocacy was achieved in 2007 through comments and submissions on cyclone standards, utilisation of the NT Government Architect, panel contracts, creating Darwin’s future and the CBD parking policy.
Architecture Awards
Yet another acclaimed awards presentation evening under the stars. Thanks to the RAIA members who submitted projects for the 2007 Northern Territory Architecture Awards and congratulations to the recipients of awards and commendations. Special congratulations go to Build Up Design for their National Award. Thanks also to the jurors Bob Nation, Brendan Meney and Sue Bradley for their invaluable contribution and commitment, and to our MC / producer Steven Huntingford for an entertaining and humorous evening.
Continuing Professional Development
The Chapter hosted five national Continuing Professional Development sessions. The Chapter also presented a number of sessions on local issues as well as introducing the Practice in Architecture Lecture Series. Steven Huntingford, Richard Layton, Simon Scally and Meredith Day are to be thanked for the large number of volunteer hours involved. Winner of the 2007 Gold Medal, Enrico Taglietti, was welcomed by a large audience at the NT Museum followed by an alfresco cocktail party.
With Thanks
The Chapter greatly appreciated the support of BlueScope Steel, Tarkett, Cerbis, the Northern Territory Government Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Territory Housing - Department of Local Government, Housing and Sport, Lockwood, Top End Sounds, the Liveris Family and the Darwin City Council. Thank you to all our members and associates who helped out throughout the year with their time, knowledge and energy.
The Year Ahead
We look forward to continuing to supply support and assistance to the local members and practices wherever possible. Chapter-developed CPD sessions will continue to be arranged, with a likely emphasis on urban design matters, as these are being highlighted by local professional associations and government. YNTAG (local group representing architectural graduates) was launched at the 2007 Christmas Party and shows promise of being active in challenging the built environment industry into thinking outside the square in 2008.
