2008 Gold Medallist

Thirty-five years after Jørn Utzon was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal for the Sydney Opera House, the architect currently working to complete his masterpiece has received the same honour.

Richard Johnson was awarded was awarded the Gold Medal on 13 March 2008.

Richard is best known as the creator of some of the nation’s most important and iconic cultural buildings and spaces. These include the Art Gallery of NSW’s New Asian Galleries, the Sydney Opera House masterplan and refurbishments (with Jørn Utzon), the Museum of Sydney, First Government House Place, and the Australian Museum’s New Zoology Building.

Current projects and cultural icons of the future include the new National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum in Hobart.

Australian Institute of Architects National President Alec Tzannes said the medal recognised Richard’s “executed work of exceptional merit, and his outstanding contribution to the development of the profession in Australia”.
