Which Way? - Directions in Indigenous Housing
A national conference shaping the future of housing for indigenous communities


We are delighted to announce the 2007 National Indigenous Housing Conference titled ‘Which Way? - Directions in Indigenous Housing’ taking place in Alice Springs from 26-27 October. The conference will explore a range of indigenous housing issues and possible solutions from the perspective of communities, government representatives, housing organisations, consultants, academics and contractors.

The conference is an initiative of the Indigenous Housing Taskforce established by The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) to explore and address the many economic and political issues surrounding the supply of housing to Indigenous communities. The Taskforce includes representatives from around Australia including indigenous architects, and architects with life long experience in working with indigenous communities. Members of the Taskforce include:

  • Carroll Go-Sam - Architect, Aboriginal Environments Research Centre

  • Gillian Barlow - Department of Aboriginal Affairs, Statewide Program Co-ordinator, New South Wales

  • Geoff Barker - Architect, Perth & Broome

  • James Bray - Chairperson, Centre for Appropriate Technology

  • Paul Pholeros - Architect, co-founder of Healthabitat, and Professor in the faculties of Architecture and Health Sciences at the University of Sydney

  • Ross Clark - General Manager Operations, RAIA

The Australian Government Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaCSIA) has contributed substantial funding to the project. Other key supporting bodies include the Queensland Department of Public Works; the Northern Territory Government; the Office of the Victorian Government Architect; the West Australian Department of Housing and Works, the New South Wales Government Architect's Office; Arup; BlueScope Steel; the Building Commission; and Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre.
