20th Century Notable South Australian Architecture Register
The South Australian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects has recently established a register of notable 20th Century South Australian Architecture. The Register has been developed with the aim of increasing the public's awareness of the heritage values of 20th century architecture and hopes to stimulate discussion of our architectural heritage and regional identity.

Background
The 20th Century Notable South Australian Architecture Register Group was formed in 1998, to prepare a register of 20th century notable South Australian buildings.
The Institute (National) was also seeking to establish an Australian Register of 20th Century Notable Architecture in 1999 and the state list is to form the basis of nominations to the national list.
Members of the working group include architects: Richard Cook, Nicolette De Lernia, Michael Pilkington and chair - Michael Queale.
Aims & Objectives
Establish / improve public awareness of notable 20th Century Architecture in South Australia.
Identify and record notable 20th Century in South Australia, in database format, based on selection using established criteria.
Foster a local architectural culture.
Outcomes
Prepare a database record of selected 20th Century South Australian notable architecture.
Educational resource.
Encourage local debate about regional identity and the value of architecture.
Criteria for Nomination
Notable South Australian 20th Century Architecture (1901-2001) should demonstrate a high degree of creative, aesthetic or technical accomplishment or be an outstanding representative of a particular architectural style or the work of a notable architect.

The Working Group have assessed over 400 buildings, based on the above criteria, and have selected 114 buildings they consider of sufficient merit for the 20th Century Notable Architecture Register. The Register was formally endorsed by the SA Chapter Council in August, 2001.
Research staff were engaged in 2004 to assist the Working Group in the preparation of citations for the 13 most notable buildings on the list, for use in an exhibition at UIA Istanbul in 2006, and as the starting point for the development of a publication in 2005, examining the value of South Australia's 20th Century architectural heritage.
