The Landcom 2008 Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards


The Landcom Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards are an initiative of the five Lower Hunter Councils, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland, Cessnock, and Newcastle. The Awards aim to identify and acknowledge urban design projects that demonstrate outstanding planning, design, and environmental management.

There are special categories in the areas of smaller and larger-scale developments, residential and commercial developments, heritage, sustainable development and landscape design. The Landcom Award for Excellence in Urban Design is presented to the overall winner.

This year's Awards were hosted by Maitland City Council and presented on Friday 24 October at the Maitland Gaol.

Landcom Award for Excellence in Urban Design
This is awarded to the overall winner for excellence in urban design. The winner is chosen by the Jury from nominations in all of the categories.

The winner of the 2008 Landcom Award for Excellence in Urban Design was the Newcastle MBA Building.

Austral Bricks Large-Scale Development Award
This award is in honour of Henry Dangar (1796 - 1861), surveyor, explorer and pastoralist. It is for large-scale, non-residential development in 2 categories - leisure/recreation/entertainment and commercial/industrial.

The winner of the Large-Scale Development Award in the Leisure/Recreation/Entertainment category was The Junction Tavern.

The winner of the Large-Scale Development Award in the Commercial/Industrial category was the Newcastle MBA Building.

Hunter Readymixed Concrete Multiple Dwelling Award
This award is in honour of Frederick Burnhardt Menkens (1855 - 1910), renowned architect, who designed over 100 buildings including St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Newcastle and St Joseph's Convent, Lochinvar. It is for multiple dwelling/mixed-use development in 2 categories: low-rise and high-rise.

The winner of the Hunter Readymixed Concrete Multiple Dwelling Award in the Low-Rise category was Winsor Street Apartments.

RPS Harper Somers O'Sullivan Landscape Design Award
This award is in honour of Alfred Sharp (1835 - 1908), landscape artist, environmentalist and park designer. It is for landscape design including subdivision development demonstrating integration of the built and natural environment.

The winner of the RPS Harper Somers O'Sullivan Landscape Design Award was Sanctuary.

Lindsay & Dynan Sustainable Development Award
For excellence in the design of developments displaying environmentally-sustainable principles including, but not limited to, resource recovery, waste minimisation and energy efficiency.

The winner of the Lindsay & Dynan Sustainable Development Award was Mason Architects' Office and Christina's B&B.

Babic Construction Heritage Award
This award is in recognition of designers who reuse, preserve and rehabilitate many of the area's buildings and precincts.

The winner of the Babic Construction Heritage Award was Thomas House.

deWitt Consulting Residential Dwelling Award
This award is in honour of Bill Hudson, past President, Trustee and Life Member of the Newcastle Master Builders' Association and one of the founders of the Awards.

The winner of the deWitt Consulting Residential Award was Dundas-Smith House.

GHD Small-Scale Commercial Development Award
This award is in honour of Charles Davis (1878 - 1963), past President Newcastle MBA and National MBA, who constructed many landmark buildings in Newcastle and the Hunter, including Newcastle City Hall and the AMP building.

The winner of the GHD Small-Scale Commercial Development Award is Woodberry Family Cantre.

AndrewsNeil UDG People's Choice Award
The winner was chosen by the general public from all of the categories. Voting coupons were available on Maitland City Council's website and also appeared in the Newcastle Herald. Voting was also done at the Newcastle Home Show in July 2008.

The winner of the AndrewsNeil UDG People's Choice Award was Lake Macquarie Variety Playground.
