Through our Refuel CPD Provider Network, these providers and events have been determined to be consistent with the requirements of the AACA/RAIA Joint Policy on Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Under this policy CPD activities are learning activities with stated learning outcomes relevant to one or more of the AACA National Competency Standards in Architecture.

Fumihiko Maki in Brisbane in June for C+A TALKS

Fumihiko Maki, one of the most recognised and influential figures in modernist architecture, is coming to Brisbane next month for the 2013 C+A TALKS.

The 1993 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner and AIA Honorary Fellow will talk about his design philosophy, drawing on examples from Maki and Associates’ internationally renowned portfolio – a portfolio that includes Tower 4 of the World Trade Centre redevelopment, currently nearing completion in New York.

Maki, who is being brought to Australia by Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia for a three-city C+A TALKS tour, speaks in Brisbane on June 17, Sydney on June 18, and Melbourne on June 20.

Environmental Design Workshop
How to Improve the Physical Environment for People with Dementia


Presented by Professor Richard Fleming, Director, NSW & ACT Dementia Training Study Centre, University of Wollongong

This workshop is being provided at no cost to participants under funding from the Australian Government.

Refreshments upon arrival, morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Target Audience:
The workshop has been designed for those directly involved in planning designing and/or evaluating built environments for people with dementia. However health professionals working with people with dementia in residential or acute care settings are welcome.

Overview of Key Content:
This interactive workshop will focus on best-practice design principles in planning/establishing facilities for people with dementia, including methods of identifying the strengths and weaknesses of facilities for people with dementia and examples of ways in which facilities have been improved. Participants attending the workshop will leave with a greater understanding of the principles underpinning design of successful facilities for people with dementia, knowledge of how to evaluate the environments they work in and how to apply the findings of the evaluation to improving their facilities.

Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia had the honour of hosting Tom Kundig (of Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects) for this year's C+A TALKS.

Tom's presentation was seen and heard nationally by the largest attendance to date of a C+A TALKS event and was inspirational in giving audiences an insight into his work and influences.

CSAW podcasts a first for timber education and skills in Australia
The University of Tasmania’s Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW), presents the second podcast in its new timber education and skills series to partner its Graduate Certificate in Timber (Processing and Building).

The aim was to start with an immediately useful subject so the first podcast was about using a moisture meter the second is determining moisture content by oven drying to the Australian standard, it is available on YouTube and as a free download from CSAW’s website.

A series of monthly podcasts are now underway, with several already in production. Podcasts on basic wood products: poles, sawn timber, and engineered wood products will follow as well as information and student reviews of the current graduate certificate in timber.
