New Zealand Architecture Master Class, September 21-27
A six-day residential design studio, presented by Architecture Foundation Australia. Tutors this year are Ian Athfield (NZIA President), Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury with convener Lindsay Johnston.

The Master Class is a studio-based program and participants undertake a design project based on the local scenic and sensitive environment. There are evening lectures by the tutors. The programme is open to practising architects, academics and recent graduates - both old and young.

'Ath' is a respected architect, teacher and NZIA Gold Medallist. Running a major NZ practice, he has an amazing house nearby built in the 1970s. Richard Leplastrier is a seminal Australian architect and teacher, an RAIA Gold Medallist and recipient of the '2004 Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award' in Finland, (other winners are Renzo Piano, Kenzo Kuma and Peter Zumthor). Peter Stutchbury is a multi-award winning Australian architect whose work has been published internationally in GA Houses, Abitare, etc. Lindsay Johnston is former Dean of Architecture and Design at the University of Newcastle, Australia and his 'sustainable architecture' work has also been published internationally.

The opportunity to spend quality time with this team is not to be missed. Recent New Zealand Master Classes have attracted international participants from as far afield as USA, Italy, Uruguay, Costa Rica and South Africa as well as from across New Zealand and Australia.

Access to the beautiful location is by boat onto a golden beach and participants stay at the splendid Awaroa Lodge - excellent food, wood fires and beautiful surroundings.

For the first time in human history, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. The challenge for Metropolis in the next few years is to find concrete answers to the great questions of the day, not only for citizens, but for all inhabitants of our planet, in terms of transport, urbanism, organisation, public health, environment, development and governance.

The 'Connecting Cities' Metropolis Congress will also focus on emerging economies of China and India and feature workshops on Olympic and Waterfront cities.

Architecture, planning and design industries are encouraged to register to attend. More information:
