DARCH recently held a Q&A(rchitect) talk by Matt Chan, the recipient of the 2011 NSW Emerging Architect Prize, hosted by Janne Ryan, ideas curator and Executive Producer of TED x Sydney, on 11 August at Surry Hills Library. We had over 70 people attend from aspiring students, to established practitioners, to the man who lives next door (literally). We heard about Matt’s experiences studying and having a collaborative practice in the Netherlands, small but significant architectural projects and teaching students in Sydney and designing and building a laneways installation, as well issues of changing practice types and influencing the city.

To coincide with the 2012 Dulux Study Tour competition, we will also be holding a slide night for Brendan Murray to share his experiences and adventures from the 2011 tour to London, Barcelona and Copenhagen. Join us for drinks, slides and stories at the new Austral Bricks Showroom: 6.00pm, Wednesday 14 September | 1/50 Carrington Street | RSVP to darch@architecture.com.au

DARCH & SONA would like to invite practicing architects to be a part of 1:1, a fun, fast paced day of creative collaboration between architecture professionals and architecture students. 1:1 is a chance to get your hands dirty for a day, building something at full scale. Upon the days completion the projects will be opened up to viewing by the public over a few Friday drinks. We are looking for practicing architects to join the participating students in small mixed teams. 9am - 5pm, Friday October 7 | Studio 10 - Fraser Studios Chippendale | Contact: Tim Hastwell tim@jdharchitects.com.au

Contact us at darch@architecture.com.au to join our mailing list, send any suggestions or to find out about our meetings that are on every second Tuesday morning.

This month brought sad news with the unexpected passing of Troppo architects Greg McNamara & Lena Yali along with landscape architect Kevin Taylor. Greg & Lena made a significant contribution to the building industry in the NT and their passing has been sorely missed by all in the Darwin community. Our condolences go out to the families.

L@tch: Due to the tragic events, August’s L@tch session was postponed to September 1, where public artist & landscape designer Tom Gray talked about his involvement with public art and its incorporation into landscape design.

In August DeNT held its AGM of which Edward Farinha stepped down as chair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ed for all the wonderful work he has done over the past 2 years in this role.

In other news we would like to congratulate the team of architects who beat the engineers to take out the annual Young Engineers Ten Pin Bowling Challenge. We would also like to wish the best of luck to everyone who is sitting the registration exam this month.

FLUX

Adelaide hosted the Australia & New Zealand student architecture conference from 7 - 9 July.  Appropriately, the theme this time around was ‘crisis’ and each speaker responded with their individual thoughts and insights. Gerard Reinmuth and Andrew Maynard presented two of the many inspiring talks, expressing in very different ways their commitment to and investment in the future of architecture and architectural education.

Andrew Maynard kicked off on Thursday morning with a fabulous inspirational rant encompassing such wildly diverse topics as the decline of line weight to the film Being John Malkovich, loosely connecting a range of his passions and concerns under the banner of ‘Things I Like’.

In contrast, Gerard Reinmuth presented the conference with an equally passionate but more cautious view of the future of the profession, suggesting that architecture should be reserved for public space rather than for the residences of the privileged few. He argued for architecture as a deeply ethical discipline, and for the increasing need for architectural education to focus much more on ethics.

DESIGN FESTIVAL 2011
The New Architects and Graduates group (NAG) have partnered with the Adelaide City Council to rethink the procurement of public space in the City of Adelaide. Process | Monday 5 September
A meaningful role in the provision of housing for the many continues to elude the architectural profession. Already bound up with factors outside the architect’s influence, expertise or interest, the field of general housing is now an even more difficult and urgent challenge because of its interrelation with climate change, demographic shifts and declining affordability. At a moment of crisis, we are compelled to ask ourselves again what our contribution to this field may be.

Foregrounding the value of architectural thinking beyond the bespoke house and the communication of this to a wide audience, September’s Process with speakers Neil Clerehan, Mark Allan and Shane Murray shed light on a successful attempt to engage with the mass-housing market from our own historical milieu – The Age/RVIA Small Homes Service. We heard about where the market and industry currently stand from an expert on green-field residential development, and we examined emerging ideas and models for engagement with the contemporary situation.

The competition offers an invaluable opportunity for members of the arts and architecture disciplines to develop creative, dynamic and energetic responses to the very real issue facing all Australians - how to develop our urban spaces within the context of today's challenges including the imperatives of climate change, increasing densities, a highly urbanised population, as well as straining resources and infrastructure.

$100,000 in prizes available. Entries open from 30 September 2011. Stage one competitions due 31 January 2012. Visit capithetical.com.au to register today.
