Welcome to the May edition of the Emerging Architects and Graduates Network monthly newsletter.

State EmAGN representatives met in Melbourne for the first face to face meeting for the year, co-inciding with the National Conference in April. It was a great mix of new and old faces who generously contributed to the ongoing planning of EmAGN at state and national levels.
Discussion centered on existing national initiatives and generating proposals for new initiatives. It was great to begin to reveal the success of the EmAGN Gold Medal Tour and the Emerging Architects Prize as they were rolled out for 2011. New ideas are always welcome; contact your local representative to make any suggestions! The face to face meetings provide a valuable means of sharing information with each representative embracing the advice of both Institute staff and other representatives.

The launch of the National Conference was hosted by clubSONA, with the support of EmAGN.
ClubSONA @ the deck was a vibrant and energetic night attended by over 120 students, graduates and emerging architects.  SONA and EmAGN will continue to foster and develop a close relationship with the aim of many more partnered events.

Departing on Saturday 14 May 2011, Australia's best emerging architects embarked on the Dulux Study Tour bound for London, Barcelona and Copenhagen. Be sure to follow the study tour recipients Carley Barrett, Christina Cho, Yuri Dillon, Jefa Greenaway and Brendan Murray on twitter and the study tour blog!

PALS is getting underway this month, and in tandem with this Regi(fru)stration will take place on the 15th of June at 6pm at the ACT Chapter Headquarters.

A more conversational format will allow attendees to have an open discussion with some examiners and recently registered architects about the process of registration and any tips or tricks one may wish to be aware of. Lucky door prizes, nibbles and drinks will be provided thanks to Kingspan.

Gold Medal Breakfast, competitions, social events, awards, advocacy, round table discussion... It's never been a better time to be a part of faction*. We have many events and initiatives planned for the upcoming year, if you would like to get involved please contact faction@raia.com.au

DARCH held a Q&A(rchitect) forum on April 28 for, and by, emerging architects. Hosted by Peter Salhani, editor of the NSW Architecture Bulletin, the panel consisted of the 2010 recipient Tamara Donnellan of Terroir, John Choi of Choi Ropiha Fighera, Lucy Humphrey Architect, Tom Ferguson of TFAD and John de Manincor and Adam Russell of DRAW. They discussed their professional experiences, opportunities and support, and put forward what they would like to change, in our profession and beyond, in order for the next generation of architects to succeed. It led to a lively discussion on procurement methods, competitions, collaboration, advocacy and architectural suffering - and ideas on how we can affect change.

As part of a the National Gold Medal Tour, the recipient Graeme Gunn will be in Sydney on June 15 for a lecture and on June 16 for a lunch event with emerging architects. It will be a great opportunity to have an open and informal chat about his career and decisions he has made along the way. Places will be limited and details will be available soon.

Contact us at darch@raia.com.au to join our mailing list, send any suggestions or to find out about our meetings that are on every second Tuesday morning. Also look out for details of our next Small Bar Tour.

Welcome
Congratulations to our new Chapter President, Mr David Karotkin, Managing Director of Sandover Pinder. We look forward to working with David, promoting architectural awareness and excellence in design amongst our members and the wider community.
Also congratulations to new MERGE chair, Yen Nee Goh of Hocking Planning and Architecture. And a warm welcome to our new committee members Jenny Tseng from Hames Sharley and the new SONA reps, Kylie Maxfield (UWA), Rebecca Lewis and Cecile Viollet (Curtin University).

Thank you
We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Rod Mollet, immediate past Chapter President, for his guidance and support for the activities of MERGE.
A big thank you to Dean Adams for his dedication and hard work over the past two years as Chair of MERGE. Dean is stepping down from the position but he will continue on as an active member of the committee.

Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards (AAAA)
For the first time in recent history, WA was given the honour to host a major Australian Institute of Architects event. The dramatic gold-metallic, sculpted timber and black metal clad spaces of the recently completed State Theatre Centre of Western Australia designed by Kerry Hill Architects, provided a fitting backdrop to the 2011 Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards (AAAA), on Thursday 24 March.
Eight achievement awards were presented with the highlight of the evening - 2011 Gold Medal - awarded to Melbourne architect, educator and urbanist Dr. Graeme Gunn.

Gold Medal Breakfast
Thirteen enthusiastic emerging architects and graduates gathered at the WA Chapter office on the morning after the awards for a breakfast with 2011 Gold Medal recipient Dr. Graeme Gunn. Armed with coffee and fresh croissants, the discussion was light and engaging as Graeme shared his experiences growing up as the son of a builder in Hamilton, his work and studies on the courtyard houses and medium density housing, his role with VicUrban and his ongoing aspirations for the profession and the education of architects. Check out Gunn Dyring at http://www.graemegunn.com.au

CEFPI Site Visit to Central Institute of Technology
A small group of MERGE members joined the CEFPI site visit to learn more about the Central Institute of Technology in Northbridge, with a presentation on educational and architectural design concepts by James Wilson of Lyons Architects. It was great to see the ideas behind the design, with a walk-around and networking session after the talk. We hope this is the start of more site visit opportunities in the future.

No longer 'Dullsville'!
Perth is changing. The dream of a sustainable creative city, more vibrant and attractive with an interesting mix of people and activities at every street corner is slowly becoming a reality. Check out City of Perth's initiatives and recent studies to reactivate underutilised and forgotten city spaces - city laneways and upper floors of existing buildings.
The recent success of 'What If - Ideas for the City of Perth', a City of Perth project that encouraged innovative solutions to planning issues, at the annual Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) National Awards for Planning Excellence, further consolidates our creative strengths, visions and determination for a better city.

Following completion of their Architecture degree from University, graduates are required to gain experience in the industry before taking a further Architectural Practice Examination to become a registered architect. Most graduates wait between 5-10 years to complete this process. There is a growing perception that it is not necessary to become a registered architect and many do not see the benefit of registration. Further to this, the examination is perceived as a lengthy and challenging process, which can often turn graduates off taking this step.

Regi(fru)stration is designed to encourage graduates to take the next step and become a registered architect through providing a relaxed forum in which many of the 'myths' surrounding the process are dispelled. An open forum of discussion, Regi(fru)stration invites two recently successful registrants and one experienced practitioner to share their experiences. The session outlines the three-stage Architectural Practice Examination, suggests sources of further information and provides the opportunity for attendees to ask questions of the panel.

The Institute also runs a program, PALS - Practice of Architecture Learning Series, which provides formal and technical training for the examination. Regi(fru)stration is designed to take place prior to this program, as an informal forum in which attendees can get a realistic and personal perspective of the process, prior to commencing the journey.

For more information about Regi(fru)stration in your state or territory (excluding Victoria), contact your local EmAGN representative.

Kingspan Insulated Panels are proud sponsors of Regi(fru)stration.
