Welcome to the June edition of the Emerging Architects and Graduates monthly newsletter.
You would be forgiven for thinking Architecture Week was in June with all that is happening with the Institute and the profession over the coming weeks. As a start we welcome Brian Zulaikha as the Institute’s new National President, and thank Karl Fender for the last 12 months of extraordinary commitment and dedication to the advancement of our profession. I feel privileged to have worked with Karl at a National level and EmAGN is looking forward to a positive relationship with our new President.
Christina Na-Heon Cho, Carly Barrett, Brendan Murray, Jefa Greenaway and Yuri Dillon have headed to London, Barcelona & Copenhagen courtesy of Dulux Australia and Davis Langdon Australia for the Dulux Study Tour. Make sure you follow the Dulux Study Tour on Twitter or click here for the blog. I am very much looking forward to hearing from the winners when they return from this amazing opportunity.
Chapter Awards are well underway in many states and as a part of the Awards program we have encouraged EmAGN members to work with their Chapters to present the state winners of the Emerging Architect Prize during the awards process. I would like to thank the Institute’s Supporting Corporate partner, Lockwood, as the proud sponsor of this National Prize, and to thank Chapter Institute staff for working through a full running order to incorporate the Prize. Entries are still open in some chapters so contact your local Chapter for further details. Anthony Balsamo

Dulux Study Tour
|
|   |

On the 14th May at Changi airport, Singapore, all five recipients of 2011 Dulux Study Tour met as a group for the first time since being announced as the winners at the AAAA in Perth March 24.
The tour started in London on the 16th May, with an architectural walking tour guided by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable Architect Ken Allison, of Archigram fame. Ten days and a thousand miles later, in Copenhagen, the tour concluded at the Danish Architecture Centre, with a cocktail reception attended by Mr James Choi, the Australian Ambassador to Denmark.
The intervening ten days introduced us to a full complement of architects, architecture, business styles, management styles, procurement styles, design styles, studio styles, beer and ham styles. From the mind blowing ‘access all areas’ tour of the Sagrada Familia, to negotiating the bike paths of Copenhagen; from the rigour of the offices of David Chipperfield, to the laid back office environments in Barcelona - what we experienced is hard to put into words. The dialogue sparked from these experiences filled every day from sun up to sun down – regularly extending into the wee hours of the morning. We look forward to sharing and continuing these discussions with our peers back in Australia; and to collectively digest what it means for all of us back here in Oz.
Highlights? Well, as every night, we finished off our last night sharing our thoughts and reflections over food and wine. There was a consensus that the high point of the trip was the site visit to Sagrada Familia - and being able to take back with us a piece of history (literally! stone tile shards from the towers. Perhaps reincarnated into rings and pendants?!). Above all, the most unexpected and pleasant highlight was the respect, fun and chemistry generated amongst the crew (and our ever-reliable hosts). Undoubtedly, this has lead to firm and longstanding friendships that will lead to collaborations and support in the future. In conjunction with the DST Alumni events held annually, this may very well be the greatest legacy of the tours; cementing a firm support network that will undoubtedly lead to tangible, positive changes in the profession in the years to come. Watch this space.
Each day felt like a week of ordinary life; a creative celebration full of adventures, and inspiration. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Our greatest thanks to our Mother Hen Bernadette from the Institute – that iPad was a stroke of genius. To Uncle Phil and Jason from Dulux for your support, wisdom and friendship – karaoke has never been so much fun. Finally, our thanks to Davis Langdon Australia for your support, warm reception and for opening up so many practice doors to our curious minds to probe.
Carly Barrett, Jefa Greenaway, Brendan Murray, Yuri Dillon & Christina Na Heon Cho – 2011 Dulux Study Tour Alumni

Following completion of their Architecture degree from University, graduates are required to gain experience in the industry before taking a further Architectural Practice Examination to become a registered architect. Most graduates wait between 5-10 years to complete this process. There is a growing perception that it is not necessary to become a registered architect and many do not see the benefit of registration. Further to this, the examination is perceived as a lengthy and challenging process, which can often turn graduates off taking this step.
Regi(fru)stration is designed to encourage graduates to take the next step and become a registered architect through providing a relaxed forum in which many of the ‘myths’ surrounding the process are dispelled. An open forum of discussion, Regi(fru)stration invites two recently successful registrants and one experienced practitioner to share their experiences. The session outlines the three-stage Architectural Practice Examination, suggests sources of further information and provides the opportunity for attendees to ask questions of the panel.
The Institute also runs a program, PALS - Practice of Architecture Learning Series, which provides formal and technical training for the examination. Regi(fru)stration is designed to take place prior to this program, as an informal forum in which attendees can get a realistic and personal perspective of the process, prior to commencing the journey.
For more information about Regi(fru)stration in your state or territory (excluding Victoria), contact your local EmAGN representative.
Kingspan Insulated Panels are proud sponsors of Regi(fru)stration.
