Welcome to the August edition of the Emerging Architects and Graduates monthly newsletter.
If you’re sitting at your desk but imagining a holiday then you will be pleased to know that the 2012 Dulux Study Tour will open for entries next week. It’s an amazing opportunity for graduates and emerging architects to travel overseas and gain insights into cities, buildings and architectural practices- and perhaps even change the direction of their career. For details see the Dulux website or architecture.com.au
The state and territory groups are all very active in initiating new events and opportunities for graduates and emerging architects, and would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to be more involved in the Institute and the profession- whether you have a big idea or a pair of hands to help out.

DARCH held a Q&A(rchitect) Collaboration forum on August 1 to launch the inaugural Collaborative Achievement in the Built Environment Awards. Gerard Reinmuth of Terroir and Richard Hough of Arup discussed their research into the collaborative processes of Jorn Utzon and Ove Arup during the design of the Sydney Opera House. The Collaborative Achievement in the Built Environment Awards have been developed to recognise outstanding contributions by non-Architects in the pursuit of a high quality built environment. Nominations will be accepted by members of the Australian Institute of Architects in the following categories: Consent Authority, Client, Developer, Builder, Planner, Consultant, and Urban Provocateur. The entry system will be available soon.
Our next event will be a Q&A(rchitect) talk by Matt Chan, the recipient of the 2011 NSW Emerging Architect Prize. The event will be hosted by Janne Ryan, ideas curator and Executive Producer of TED x Sydney, at 6.30pm Thursday 11 August at Surry Hills Library. Matt will be answering questions on how he got to where he is in his career, who has helped him, and most importantly why architects are such geeks. Send your questions for Matt to darch@architecture.com.au.
To coincide with the 2012 Dulux Study Tour competition, we will also be holding a slide night for Brendan Murray to share his experiences of the 2011 tour to London, Barcelona and Copenhagen. Details will be available soon.
Contact us at darch@architecture.com.au to join our mailing list, send any suggestions or to find out about our meetings that are on every second Tuesday morning.

This has been a busy month for Dent,
Well into the dry, the weather up here is simply fantastic; Darwin is bustling, with tourists and functions.
There is no better is time than the dry, for our "Southern" visitors to travel up here and thaw out the winter chills.
Gold Medal: One of the distinguished southern visitors to visit was this year’s Gold Medal recipient Graeme Gunn. Graeme delivered his presentation on Thursday 14 July and on Friday it was Dent's turn. We hosted an outdoor BBQ at the gardens golf links (thanks Roz) and this informal setting allowed all present to chat and mingle with Graeme. I believe Graeme enjoyed the event as he left at 10:30pm. Thank you Graeme for your generosity.
L@TCH: We also hosted our July L@TCH session and the speaker, Dr Sarah Smith from ISIS Darwin, talked about the Green Cities conference she attended and her site visit to the Pixel building in Melbourne and of the refurbishment of the ISIS office in Darwin.
AGM: I am also glad to report that we held our AGM recently and that Alice Chambers has been elected as the new Chairperson for DeNT. Alice has our full support and will be representing the Northern Territory as chairperson of DeNT at the next EMAGN face to face meeting to be held in Sydney.
Facebook page: Alice together with Andrew are setting up the DeNT Facebook page, details to be advised.
Regi(fru)stration: We held our second Regi(fru)stration for 2011 on the 3rd of this month, thank you Kingspan Insulated Panels for your support. We hope with your support next year we can take Regi(fru)stration also to Alice Springs.
I would like to thank the people that assisted me during my time as DeNT Chair; Laura Di Pauli (National Office). Gavin and Roz at our NT Chapter. Ben and a special thanks to Joanna Best for her support and advice for the past 3 years.
Regards
Edward Farinha - Immediate past chair – DeNT
