Parallax, the 2009 National Architecture Conference was held in Melbourne from Thursday 30th April - Saturday 2nd May. Described as the 'Writers Festival of Architecture', it was a fantastic opportunity to join in conversation from an exciting list of international guest speakers including Peter Wilson (Bolles+Wilson), Aaron Betsky, Sou Fujimoto, Slavkoj Zizek (Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities), Tatiana Bilbao (Tatiana Bilbao/mx.a S.C), Veronika Valk (Zizi&yoyo), Winka Dubbeldam (Archi-Tectonics) and Bijoy Jain (Studio Mumbai) among many others. Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Darwin will have the opportunity to attend Ken Maher's presentation during July, August and October respectively. A revision to the advertised schedule for presentations in Canberra and Melbourne will be advised at a later date. Once again in 2009 the National Gold Medal Tour will be accompanied by a planned interactive EmAGN event. Details of these events will be released through your local Chapter as the events approach in each State and Territory. The 2009 National Gold Medal Tour is proudly sponsored by the Institute's Principal Corporate Partner, BlueScope Steel.

Session 01 of the 2009 Architectural Practice Examination (APE) is currently underway with Part 01 (logbook submission) completed in early March, Part 02 (written examination) early April and part 03 (examination by interview) throughout May. The RE:HAB student congress is taking place in Canberra in July, check out the event and register at www.checkintorehab.com.au. The Congress has been ushering in new thinking since the 1960s and is considered by most to be a once in a lifetime experience - the highlight of an education. Canberra, the National Capital - an "ideal city", is the location for RE:HAB. Join other young leaders from 5-10 July at the 2009 Congress to design, debate and dance a way through a week of critical propositions.

faction will be hosting an event as part of the congress.

In Week 18 we infiltrated Melbourne and scored a fantastic interview with BIG's Bjarke Ingels for an upcoming DARCHCAST. Should be interesting to compare this with an upcoming chat to 2009 Gold Medalist Ken Maher.

May 14 at Tusculum is REMARCH: UTS Broadway competition, where we create a forum for competition entrants to present their schemes and ideas. Worth checking out, not to mention the free beer!

Yarch.Q has been brainstorming ideas for new events in Brisbane. Yarch.Q believe that it's important to keep events free, not only to educate and expand knowledge, but also as an important communication tool between students, graduates, emerging and established Architects.

Some ideas put forward have been to curate an exhibition of graduate and emerging architects/artists/designers and auction works, with all proceeds going to charity. Another popular suggestion has been in the form of a blog, which could be updated every week with events, competitions, news and photo galleries.

Our major project this year will be to organise an architectural bus tour of winning projects in the Brisbane Regional Awards in the latter half of this year.

Registration study groups are conducted every second Thursday night in the city. If you are considering sitting your registration this year and would like to be involved, please contact us. yarch.q@gmail.com

Adelaide designers are eagerly awaiting a line-up of speakers to recharge on. The University of Adelaide 2009 Speaker Series kicked off on Wednesday the 29th of April with Michael Wright of Rush\Wright Associates. Michael is a Melbourne based Landscape Architect working mostly on public projects. Docklands Park and Royal Park Wetlands in Melbourne are key projects.

June is fast approaching which means your chance to contribute to the blog "Adelaide Architecture is Boring" is running out! Be heard. Include your opinion in the blog at:

Debate is a healthy word, especially in the architectural profession. Adelaide has seen its fair share in the past months. We seem to be very good at talking, but terrible at doing! Our government does not have the confidence to make decisions and good ideas are falling by the wayside. When was the last significant civic building project in Adelaide? How many national awards is the state winning?...

NAG's network got broader over the last month and we are currently partnering with the Adelaide based contemporary craft and design centre Jam Factory. Our next event will be a collaborative evening with their Glass, Ceramics, Metal and Furniture studios.

The Young Architects Tasmania group has elected Hugh Maguire as the new state representative for EmAGN and thanks Peter Walker for his time and energy in the position for the past two years.  While an official YAT meeting has not been held this month, our members have actively represented the profession in Tasmania's cultural events calendar.

Tasmania's bi-annual arts festival 'Ten Days on the Island' was held again this year.As part of the programme, the University of Tasmania's School of Architecture hosted Chris Bosse of Lava who conducted a workshop with the students based on the idea of 'spatial origami'. The resultant exhibit bought back to life the extinct Thylacine: interlocking Tasmanian Tigers were suspended at the entry to the Queen Victoria Art Gallery in Launceston in a fun display. Chris was also 'in conversation' with local architects Peta Heffernan and Peter Walker at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, further elaborating on Lava's approach to architecture in the digital realm.

Shared Space Hobart, an exhibition of RMIT student innovative proposals for Hobart's Waterfront, was held at the TAS Chapter offices. The work was well received by the local profession and contributed to the ongoing dialogue about the area and its potential.

The next YAT meeting will be held on May 14th at 6pm, at the Chapter office 1/19a Hunter St Hobart.

The most current Process@Loop event was held on Monday 4th May and discussions centered around the following topic:

In the wake of February's devastating bushfires, communities throughout Victoria were faced with an unprecedented reconstruction effort. Three Melbourne practitioners discuss their involvement in the rebuilding and the continued relevance of architecture in such an undertaking.

Site Architecture Studio was the host for the first Merge 'Talk On A Practice' for 2009. On Wednesday April 22nd Directors Stephen Hart and Paul Edwards talked about how the practice operates on a day to day basis along with some of the design philosophies directly relating to their recent projects, which are all at various stages. This gave emerging members of the architecture industry an insightful look into the practice. Everyone enjoyed the evening with a few drinks and some nibblies.

The next 'Talk On A Practice' is going to be at MORQ in Fremantle on June 11th. To register for this event please email merge@raia.com.au with the names and emails of the people you will be attending with.

Small Bar Tour
The next Merge event will be a small bar tour. A new event that we think will gain a lot of interest. The small bar tour looks at some of the most recent bars to open in the Perth CBD since the new liquor laws were introduced to encourage small bars to open. Some haven't even opened their doors yet. The tour will be on Wed 20th May, 2009 starting after work at 6:00pm. More details to be released shortly. To register for this event please email merge@raia.com.au with the names and emails of the people you will be attending with and we will be in contact shortly to let you know of the first bar and other specific details. Contact us ASAP as there may be limited numbers.
