The much anticipated Dulux Study Tour 2009 recently took place in London and Paris (9th – 17th May) and, by all accounts, once again proved to be a resounding success. The study tour incorporated a variety of different activities including architectural walking tours, site visits, practice visits and a Royal British Institute of Architects (RIBA) cocktail reception.

Activities included an introduction to RIBA, a tour of the headquarters and several architectural walking tours that served to outline significant architecture in London. Site visits included RIBA award winning buildings such as the Fieldon House and Student Village (2008) and the AMEC Blizard Building (2006). A definite highlight of the tour was the opportunity to visit internationally renowned and emerging architectural firms Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid, Carmody Groarke and David Chipperfield. A short trip to Paris included an architectural walking tour of La Defense and practice visits to Studio Milou, Dominique Perrault, Jean Nouvel and Kengo Kuma Associates.

The trip was an amazing experience for all involved. The opportunity is an initiative that will assist the participating emerging architects and graduates not only in the short term but well into their development as young professionals.

Once again congratulations to recipients Scott Colegate (SA) – Walter Brooke & Associates, Lee Collard (NSW) – Prescott Architects, Paul Edwards (WA) – Site Architecture Studio, Amelia Holliday (NSW) – Neeson Murcutt and Tina Turrisi (NSW) – Rice Daubney. EmAGN would like to thank the Australian Institute of Architects supporting corporate partners Dulux and Virgin Atlantic for their generous support on this initiative. A huge thank you must also go to Melissa Medcalf (Australian Institute of Architects) who did a fantastic job with the organisation and coordination of the tour, ensuring that a great trip was had by all.

Study tour reports by recipients will be published in the coming months in Institute communications and each of them will present their experience of the Dulux Study Tour in their respective States. Each Local chapter will notify of these dates as they approach.

We all look forward to building upon the Study Tour from this year and encourage all eligible candidates to submit for this exciting initiative and fantastic opportunity in 2010.

Session 01 of the 2009 Architectural Practice Examination (APE) is now complete with Part 01 (logbook submission) completed in early March, Part 02 (written examination) early April and part 03 (examination by interview) throughout May. Congratulations to all successful candidates. Part 01 of Session 02 begins in July with following parts continuing in September and October. Members of Young Architects QLD have worked together to create a new identity for the group. We will now be simply known as YAQ. We will continue to work towards networking emerging and graduate architects, and promote cross disciplinary professional relationships in Brisbane.

Recently, Sir Peter Cook (Archigram) paid a visit to our city, thanks to Populous (HOK sport) for whom he is a design consultant. Seats were full at the Friday night lecture held at the University of Queensland. We were inspired, educated and entertained by one of the most prolific visionaries, and educators in architecture. Peter showed us his early works with Archigram through to his most recent built work. It was truly inspiring to see an architect who, after many years in the profession, still manages to prance on stage and present in such an animated style that was evident of his enthusiasm and love for architecture.

PechaKutcha Night Brisbane Vol 11 was held @ Brisbane Powerhouse on Wednesday 3 June 20:20. Presenters included Richard Kirk- Architect, Chelsea De Luca- Jewellery, Cathy Smith- Ikea hacker, Erik Van Genderen- Fixed Gear Bicycle designer, Ian Galloway- QLD Museum director and more. www.pechakuchabrisbane.org

Proudly hosted by the New Architects and Graduates Group (NAG) in conjunction with the SA Institute of Architects.

Awards Lite is the informal side of the 2009 SA Architecture Awards.

Last year's cocktail party proved to be a huge success with great music, prize giveaways and the infamous dance-off competition! This year the event takes place in The Tunnels at The Lion, on Friday 12 June. The Tunnels offer a stylish venue to have a drink and socialise with friends and colleagues and discuss all the entries in the 2009 SA Architecture Awards.

You will still get to view all the entries and see the winning projects (without having to sit through all the awards - there are 88 entries this year!)

Your ticket will provide you entry into the exclusive event and includes drinks and canapés from 9pm til midnight.

The NAG Award will be presented at the Awards Lite cocktail party followed, once again, by a night of great music, entertainment and prize giveaways.

So, if you don’t want to sit through another awards ceremony but still want to see who’s who of the Adelaide Architecture scene, join us at The Tunnels. Pull out your favourite cocktail dress, dust off your hip lounge suit and join us for the 2009 Architecture Awards Cocktail Party: Awards Lite!

Students are also welcome and encouraged to attend to find out more about their future profession.

Architecture beyond Style and Fashion was an exhibition curated by a number of Hobart practitioners and staff and 5th year architecture students from UTAS. It explored the creative dialogue between the architect and the client, the complex layering of client brief, architectural concepts, ideas and site response hidden within built form by showcasing recent projects from a number of Tasmanian architectural practices.

The Rudd Government's Education Revolution' has injected a tremendous flood of capital into the public and private education sector. However, the added requirement of 'stimulating' the economy - by providing immediate work for contractors and other trades - has put considerable strain on the design practitioners committed to achieving the revolution.

Tight time-frames and the huge scope of the undertaking has resulted in novel and unforeseen solutions. In June's Process, firms involved with policy, with administration and with running the projects on site discuss such an 'Architecture of the Education Revolution'.

Jacqui and Tom, hosts of Process, are also editors of a free and independent architecture magazine called POST, distributed in Melbourne and available for download on the web: www.postmagazine.org.

POST is currently looking for contributors for Issue 03, based on the theme 'Memory'. Visit the website for details and to view Issues 1 & 2.

Small Bar Tour
The most recent Merge event was Interstitial - Small Bar Tour, a new event that gained a lot of interest with over 70 people registering. The small bar tour looked at some of the most recent bars to open in the Perth CBD since the new liquor laws were introduced to encourage small bars to open 3 years ago. The tour was on Wed 20th May starting after work 6:00pm at Tiger Tiger in Murray Mews with an enthralling talk from the owner, Clare Wayne, on her dogged determination to open the first small bar in Perth. The next bar was Alda’s in Wolf Lane, the second small bar to open its doors. Paul Lim, from Anitma, gave a designers insight into the process of converting the existing warehouse into a high end fashion store, Pierucci and Alda’s café, which was soon transformed into a bar. The third bar we visited and the most recent bar to open in Perth was Andaluz. A fantastic night was topped off here with some Spanish flamenco tunes belting out over a couple of large glasses of red. A great night was had by all. Merge will definitely be doing more small bar tours in the future.

Talk On A Practice
The next Talk On A Practice was going to be at MORQ in Fremantle. Unfortunately that has had to be postponed until later in the year. We can confirm however that another Practice Talk will be held on July 15th at Gresley Abas. To register for this event please email merge@raia.com.au with the names and emails of the people you will be attending with.

Registration Seminar
For those looking to attempt the very treacherous feat of Registration, help is here. A registration seminar is confirmed for lunch time on July 7th where Merge will be enlightening our fellow students and graduates on the joys of the registration process. This will be held in conjunction with the Architects Board of WA at the Institutes offices at 33 Broadway, Nedlands. Please email Voula.Kaplanis@raia.com.au with the names of the people you will be attending with.
