EmAGN look forward to working with Melinda on a number of exciting opportunities during her 12 month term. EmAGN would also like to take this opportunity to thank Howard Tanner (Immediate Past President) for his outstanding support for young and emerging architects during his time as National President. EmAGN welcome the recent opening of the new Gallery of Australian Design in Commonwealth Place, Parkes, within the parliamentary triangle in Canberra. The gallery is the first of its kind in Australia and is a public facility attracting and engaging visitors to the National Capital as well as the local community. In addition to showcasing great Australian design, the gallery will also provide research opportunities and a forum to explore design theory and product. The Gallery will host a permanent exhibition 'Defining Moments in Australian Design' as well as featuring rotating exhibitions including the Venice Biennale among many others. The Gallery of Australian Design is a partnership between the National Museum of Australia, the Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and the University of Canberra. The patron of the gallery is His Excellency Michael Bryce.

Built Environment Meets Parliament (BEMP) takes place in Canberra in early August at Parliament House. Introduced in 2007, BEMP is an annual conversation between parliamentarians and industry leaders that showcases the relationship between Australian communities and their built environment. BEMP offers an opportunity to explore the economic, social, environmental and governance issues that help shape national prosperity. BEMP 2009 will focus on how the building sector, in partnership with Government, can contribute to Australia's early recovery and provide a strong foundation for future prosperity. The four key themes are prosperity, liveability, sustainability and partnerships. BEMP is hosted by; Association of Consulting Engineers Australia, Green Building Council of Australia, Planning Institute of Australia, Property Council of Australia and the Australian Institute of Architects.

The competition has a Festival bent, which Adelaide is world famous for. The proposal was accepted by the Lord Mayor and Councillors, and NAG is now working towards developing a brief, marketing campaign and focus group to run this exciting initiative. Design Festival will be launched in November this year.

Beauty cannot be taught, but must be mastered. In whatever form it appears to the beholder, beauty is something that is universally appreciated. When we describe Melbourne's urban identity, beauty is rarely spoken about. We tend to describe good architecture as 'interesting' or 'polemic' rather than 'beautiful'. How do we attribute value to the buildings we create? Is beauty a redundant discussion in the midst of digital processes and intellectual rhetoric? This month at Process, we ask three local practices to comment.

Jacqui and Tom, hosts of Process, are also editors of a free and independent architecture magazine called POST, distributed in Melbourne and available for download on the web: www.postmagazine.org.

POST is currently looking for contributors for Issue 03, based on the theme 'Memory'. Visit the website for details and to view Issues 1 & 2.

Informal and relaxed, this event was well received and has ingrained itself as a favourite event on the Merge calendar.
