Welcome to the first edition of the EmAGN Newsletter for 2009. After a successful first 12 months, EmAGN looks forward to continuing to represent and support the interests of Chapter based graduates and emerging architects groups, as well as providing the demographic with exciting opportunities through significant EmAGN initiatives.

EmAGN have an exciting year planned ahead with the continuation and development of existing national and chapter-based initiatives such as the monthly EmAGN Newsletter, the Emerging Architects Prize, the National Gold Medal Tour event, the 2010 Architectural Photography Diary and the exciting Dulux Study Tour.

The 2009 Dulux Study Tour was launched at the end of 2008 and the five prize recipients will travel to London with a short trip to Paris in May this year. Employer nominations for outstanding contributions to architecture close at the end of January and we encourage all eligible candidates to complete and submit applications. Please visit dulux.com.au/duluxstudytour for further information. EmAGN would like to thank Supporting Corporate Partners Dulux and Virgin Atlantic for their generous support of this initiative allowing a unique, wonderful and amazing experience for graduates and emerging architects.

There are also other exciting initiatives planned throughout 2009, notably the launch of the EmAGN website early this year.

2009 is proving to be a very exciting year for EmAGN and we look forward to your continued support and involvement throughout the next twelve months.

faction is almost back on deck as January kicks off and is looking for new members. Contact Sophie at the Institute if there is something you want to see happen and are keen.

Regi(fru)stration 4, to prime hopefuls for the 2009 Architectural Practice Exam will be held early in the new year. Keep an eye out for a date in February. Now would be a good time to make sure your logbook is up to date and identify any areas where you may be short on experience.

Kenney Lemire is moving on from the committee to travel overseas. faction would like to thank Kenney for his hard work last year and especially for the dynamic display he designed for the New Push Exhibition.

End of year event 2008.
In December NAG celebrated the ‘year that was’ together with the 3rd year UniSA architecture students, as they presented their inaugural end of year exhibition called “I’m so Spatial”. The exhibition was held for one night only at Higher Ground and provided the students an opportunity to show their work to a broader, design oriented audience. We congratulate the students on the success of their exhibition.

NAG meeting - January 2009
All interested New Architects and Graduates are invited to attend NAG meetings. The first NAG meeting for 2009 will be held Wednesday 21 January at 6pm, at the Medina Treasury (Victoria Square).

NAG Design Competition
The New Architects Group will run a new design competition in 2009. Through this competition we will identify a number of neglected places within our city, choose one and transform the place into SOMEWHERE NICE.

This is a real competition with physical and citywide impact. It is intended that the design would serve as an informal Fringe performance venue.
ADELAIDE REGENERATION THROUGH FESTIVAL will be our branding.

Because NAG has an average experience range of about 4-5 years in practice, the New Architects Group see this as a way to address a significant shortcoming in our profession. Within formative years, many graduates are not given the opportunity to take ownership of real design projects and have their designs built. The creative talent of our emerging architects in this state is being eaten up by the business of architecture and bureaucratic process. We see this design competition as an opportunity for graduates to reveal their talents to Adelaide, and contribute to the quality of our city in a small but meaningful way.
Adelaide needs them!

SA Architectural Awards
NAG is again working with the Institute, as part of the creative direction team for the 2009 SA Architectural Awards, and we are looking forward to the official awards launch on January 29!

This month’s PROCESS was the annual Arch^Up Great Architecture Debate. Debating the topic that ‘Process Is More Important Than Product’ we had Mel Dodd (RMIT & MUF), Michael Roper (BKK Architects) and Simon Shiel (ARM) on the affirmative side, with Dan Demant (Six Degrees), Sophie Herel (Kerstin Thompson Architects) and Kylie Fitt (Fitt de Felice) on the negative. A great turn-out as always with the affirmative team winning by Applause-O-Meter!

With many more exciting topics and presenters lined-up for the year ahead, PROCESS is at 6:30pm on the first Monday of every month at Loop Bar in Melbourne (www.looponline.com.au). To view flyers from previous events, visit www.myspace.com/melbourne_process.
