Welcome to the April edition of the monthly Emerging Architects and Graduates Network newsletter.

Do you have your ticket to the 2010 National Architecture Conference? Creative Director Melanie Dodd has prepared an outstanding program that you can not afford to miss, including Australian award winning architects Peter Corrigan, Timothy Hill and Kerstin Thompson plus many more national and international designers, thinkers and stars! Get sensory overload at the opening party, Pecha Kucha, architecture tours, sTute and tradeshows. You can find more info at www.architecture.com.au/extraordinary.

This month we welcome in a new New South Wales EmAGN representative, Associate at Utz Sanby, Jacqui Connor. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the former NSW EmAGN representative Joe Snell for his extraordinary contribution to EmAGN since 2008 and wish him all the best for the future.

The Australian Institute of Architects 2010 Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards was held on 18 March in Brisbane. EmAGN wishes to congratulate the 2010 Gold Medalists lists Lindsay and Kerry Clare for their achievement, and recognises the valuable support of the Institute’s Principal Corporate Partner, BlueScope Steel.

An extract from the 2010 citation reads:
"Lindsay and Kerry Clare have made an enormous contribution to the advancement of architecture and particularly sustainable architecture, with a strong held belief that good design and sustainable design are intrinsically linked. Since starting practice in 1979, Kerry and Lindsay were key to pioneering the regional style associated with the Sunshine Coast. They are widely regarded for projects that display contextual sensitivity, clarity of design and environmentally sustainable principles."

As an annual initiative of EmAGN, we are delighted to be able to continue to co-ordinate a Gold Medal event in each state and territory giving emerging architects and graduates a chance to meet and talk with Gold Medalists. I am looking forward to seeing the results of this event in each state and territory as it widely becomes part of the tour that Gold Medalists enjoy the most. Contact your local EmAGN representative for dates and more information about this EmAGN event in your city.

Also part of the 2010 Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards, EmAGN is pleased to announce the winners of the distinguished 2010 Dulux Study Tour. Five young Australian architects and gradates will embark on the world trip of their dreams - visiting architectural marvels and master architects across Europe.

Australian Institute of Architects National President Melinda Dodson said she was proud to announce the winners were Mark Berlangieri (Adelaide), Thomas Ferguson (Sydney), Josephine Hurley (Sydney), Michael McPherson (Newcastle) and David Sutherland (Sydney). Congratulations to all five of the 2010 recipients! The Dulux Study Tour is certainly the most exciting and unique opportunity of its kind in Australia, and EmAGN wishes you all the best for the trip.

The 2010 Study tour is made possible by Dulux and Davis Langdon, with all travel provided by Virgin Atlantic. Under the program, the winning designers intending to be leaders in the profession are given a unique opportunity to visit recent projects in Britain, France and Spain, and to connect with top architectural practices while there.

The EmAGN representatives from each state and territory are meeting in Sydney on the 21st of April to workshop some new and continuing initiatives, and look forward to sharing ideas between each state group. To have your views and ideas tabled at the meeting, get in contact with your local EmAGN rep through our website. To continue to make the monthly EmAGN newsletter and website a valuable and relevant resource for you, feel free to email me your suggestions at emagn@raia.com.au so we can collectively foster a community of architecture amongst our members.

Look forward to seeing you all at the 2010 National Architecture Conference!

PechaKucha Night Vol15 was a special event, raising money for the reconstruction of Haiti. PechaKucha gobally has been raising money for Architecture for Humanity to rebuild Haiti, 20 seconds at a time, already raising enough money to build a school. PechaKucha Brisbane, with the generous sponsorship of Crumpler, Brisbane Powerhouse and Hopscotch films, sold raffle tickets, with all the money going directly to Architecture for Humanity. T’was a great night with a diverse range of speakers including Film makers, web psychologists, interactive media mappers, and M3Architecture talking about their concepts behind the Tree of Knowledge project which recently won a regional commendation.

Exciting news! Papa PechaKucha, Mark Dytham will be in town as a guest speaker for the UQ Architecture Lecture series. We will be having a special edition PechaKucha Night on Tuesday 25 May at the Brisbane Powerhouse!

Design Festival Competition - winners announced!

First Place - A TEAM - Sean Humphries and Sasha Radjenovich
Second Place - CRAFTY - Alex Hall and David Lawson
Third Place - DAVIS and DAVIS - Matthew Davis and Sally Davis

The jury congratulated A TEAM for producing a highly sophisticated concept for the Rundle Street precinct. The dynamic nature of the collection is vibrant and unique. The winning design proposes a form making language that challenges the conventional streetscape and actively engages awareness of the value of design. The project successfully demonstrates greening of the city whilst addressing the integrated public art master plan. ‘Folding Rundle’ will be implemented as part of the Rundle Street footpath upgrade which is expected to begin in the coming months.

Design Festival wishes to thanks all entrants, sponsors and jurors. Watch out for the launch of Design Festival 2011. Keep an eye on our facebook page to view the winning entries!

Process - April - What's on your desk?

Design rarely happens in a vacuum, yet the serendipitous moments of encounter that inspire design solutions are often downplayed. This month at Process we invite three young practices to share a snapshot of their design practice, presenting current projects, sketch designs, competition entries, side concerns, favoured books, ticket stubs and whatever else is
on their desks.

2010 National Architecture Conference – extra/ordinary
22-24 April 2010, Sydney

extra/ordinary will dwell on the culture of the extraordinarily ordinary. As an antidote to the incessant abstractions of globalisation, we will be gathering together those who have an enthusiasm for engaging with the contingency of the everyday: inventing new ways of operating; embracing collaborative approaches and initiating direct action on the ground. Producing outcomes that are innovative and utilitarian, provocative and pragmatic. Resolving ordinary problems in extraordinary ways.

The Annual Design Awards 2010

The International Celebration of Design Excellence

The Annual Design Awards (nicknamed ANNDAS) is a global recognition of cutting edge visual communications, set up to reward outstanding contribution's within the Design industry. We have brought together some of the most amazing talents and respected figures from around the world to judge this global event which aims to become the premier design awards and set international standards. The Annual Design Awards are unlike other design awards as we don't offer hundreds of categories to enter, nor do we set entry fees so high that only the large corporates can enter. These awards exist so that we can discover and celebrate outstanding talents in the design world and to reward creativity with a meaningful honour. The Annual Design Awards (ANNDAS) is open to everyone around the world, from large corporate professionals to work-from-home freelancers, and the entry fee is kept very low so that we don't restrict creativity. Entrants to the awards will gain much more than just having their work rated by the best in the business! Every entrant will feature in the new Designers Directory, have the chance to feature in the yearly book that will be published to showcase the best designs, and have access to the website notice board where designers can promote their business, special offers, job vacancies and much more.

Emerging Architect Prize

The Emerging Architect Prize has up until now been run by ACT, NT, SA and more recently QLD. In 2010 The Australian Institute of Architects will run this prize across all states and territories in Australia with state winners going through to be judged by a national jury. The person selected by the national jury as the winner of the National Emerging Architect Prize will be announced at the Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards in March 2011.

The Emerging Architect Prize has been developed to acknowledge an individual emerging architect’s contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community involvement, which advances the professions role within the public arena.

The Institute's Supporting Corporate partner, Lockwood, is the proud sponsor of this National Prize and will award the National Emerging Architect Prize winner with a cash prize of $2000.

2010 Venice Architecture Biennale
29th August – 21st November

'People meet in architecture' to be the over-arching theme of the 2010 Venice Biennale

The Directory of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition, Kazuyo Sejima, has titled the upcoming Biennale 'People meet in architecture'. "The idea is to help people to relate to architecture, help architecture relate to people and help people relate to themselves" explains Kazuyo Sejima.

She added that separate spaces would be allocated for each architect or theme, allowing participants to be their own curators. "In this way, contributors will design their own space and make presentations that consider the experience of the visitor both physically and conceptually. It will be a series of spaces rather than a series of objects," she said.

Also announced were two new projects for this year's event; Architecture Saturdays, and the greater involvement of the Universities.

As part of Architecture Saturdays, a series of conversations, performances and weekly discussions with international architects, critics and personalities will take place every Saturday for the duration of the exhibition. Meetings will be lead by Sejima, as well as every director of former editions of the Biennale - including Vittorio Gregotti, Paolo Poroghesi, Francesco Dal Co, Hans Hollein, Massimiliano Fuksas, Deyan Sudjic, Kurt W. Forster, Richard burdett, and Aaron Besky.
